Well, as done as I’m gonna get it, anyway 😛

So I needed a short break, so I figured why not make a progress post!

So anyway, my game is based on you being beneath the Surf Ace. Yes, two words.

Basically, the concept is that you play as a surfboard, and your goal is to knock your rider (the Surf Ace) off without destroying yourself in the process. Different obstacles will deal different amounts of damage to you and your rider. Rocks mostly hurt you, while seagulls only hurt the rider.


Here’s a screenshot of basically what I’ve got so far:

Yeah, be jealous of those mostly-placeholder-but-will-probably-be-used-anyway-because-I’ll-run-out-of-time graphics.

What I’ve accomplished:
-You can move!
-The obstacles move too!
    -The rocks move down from the top
    -The sharks swim up from the bottom
    -The seagulls fly across side-to-side
-The obstacles damage you and your rider!
-The health bars work!
-Haven’t been curled up crying in the corner! (yet)

What I need to do:
-Make some more obstacles
-Actually make it differ by level. Right now, that’s just static text :p
-Actually make you win when you get the guy to 0 health or lose when you hit 0 health
-Title Screen
-Probably a crapton more I’m forgetting


Oh, and since I know you’re all wondering.

Yes, ladies. That hunk of a surf ace is single.

Yes, I exude so much confidence in that title.

I’ve been looking to enter one of these for a while. Unfortunately, I’m a lazy bum and haven’t really spent a lot of time learning stuff about game creation. It’s been a year since I almost attempted a dare, and until a week ago I didn’t really know that much more than I did then. But, with a little fire-lighting from my friend I have at least gotten off my butt and started looking into Unity! Unfortunately, there’s only so much you can learn in a week…I’ve watched some basic tutorials and live trainings, and know enough that I was able to create my goto first game I make for each medium I try (which has really only been TI-83, GameMaker, Java, and now Unity). It’s not a terribly complex game (I mean, it’s a recreation of something I wrote on a TI-83), but it’s something. If you really want to try it, here’s a link:

Underwhelming, I know. So anyway, I’m going to try and push the rest of this week to get more comfortable working in Unity and hopefully get to the point where I feel like I can enter. I just don’t want to push myself too hard and burn myself out by the time the compo rolls around… My fallback plan if I don’t think I’ll be able to handle the compo is to drop back to the Jam with my friend. So we’ll see.

If I do end up entering, here’s what I’ll be using:

Engine: Unity
Art: Paint/GIMP. Mostly depends on what style I go with. For small sprite editing, Paint all the way!
Audio: Dunno. Hopefully I’ll look into stuff by Compo time.
Drink: Whatever’s in the fridge. Most likely some combination of Pepsi and Chocolate Milk (not combination like mixed together, though…that’d be gross…)

Well, I’ve spent the last couple days frantically trying to learn enough stuff to feel confident enough to enter the compo…and I’m still not sure whether or not I’ll give it a go.

I was working on a basic platformer, just to get some experience with collision, animation, and other basic stuff. I feel like I know enough that I want to get my hands dirty, but not enough that I could actually produce something in the compo….Now, I’m not saying I’ll be sad if I can’t turn out a good game, but I will be a little sad if I try to enter and can’t manage to put out anything. I’ll feel like I wasted my time. (I’m sure I’ll learn stuff, making it worth the time, but still…)

Anyway, I figure I’ll just plop the extremely (I can’t really stress that enough) simple test I made here in case anyone wants to take a look and see if they can give me some tips (trust me, I could do a lot of the organization better. Especially my animation stuff, which I threw together very quickly just to see if I could get it working before heading to bed).

Well, I guess I’ll see how I feel about this tomorrow. I should have some time to work on stuff before the compo, so who knows…maybe I’ll do enough to feel ready. Whether I join you all tomorrow or not, good luck, and have fun!

Procrastination Powers Activate!

Okay, so I’ve totally been meaning to try some game stuff in my spare time in order to prepare myself to enter a Ludum Dare, but I kinda…haven’t really done much…I’ve been too busy playing video games to learn to make them.


But! I am going to attempt to learn some basic stuff (specifically trying to make a simple platformer) by this weekend that will hopefully allow me to be confident enough to participate! Will I succeed? Well, I don’t feel terribly confident, but I shall make my best effort! That said, if any of you have some tips, tutorials, etc. that you found helpful while learning that would be much appreciated!

I’m planning on using Java to make an applet for now, so anything specific to that would be great!


Well, wether get to a point where I feel I can participate or not, I wish the rest of you the best of luck! I hope to be competing with you all soon!
