Ring of Legends – We gave up (kind of Postmortem)

This is the first time I don’t submit a game for a Ludum Dare :(


I have participated in 3 jams (LD #26 Jam, MiniLD #46 and LD #28 Jam) with a friend and they were fun experiences, at least the first two. This time my friend didn’t want to participate, so I asked another friend for help. We were very excited with the Ring of Legends idea, especially my friend, since League of Legends is his favorite game!

I, on the other hand, like League of Legends but it’s not one of my favorite games (hey, I’m not a Dota guy either, my favorite game is Portal). I was thrilled to make a multiplayer game! Everything was in position, I set up a server last week and Skype’d with my friend about the game. We were going to keep it simple, only 6 champions, 4 skills, no items, no inhibitors, no runes, maybe minions and maybe spells. Also, we were going to start on Friday to have the option for 96 hours instead of 72, because it was my first multiplayer game.

My friend had a few things to take care of before the jam, but we were going to start in the afternoon. We agreed to start at the same time even though we had different things to do (graphics/programming). I was waiting for him until 10:00 PM, I called him and he was playing League of Legends 😛 (he totally forgot the jam). There goes one day :(

Oh, he also made some plans for the Saturday’s morning!

We finally started working on the game at about 4:00 PM. I wrote a short post, ran the script for the live screenshots page and started programming :) My friend designed a simple grass tile, the background image for the health/mana HUD and four (!) different versions of Garen. That was the first problem. Every new image was better than the previous one, but even the first one was good for a 72hr jam. I tried to explain that to him, but he wouldn’t listen! He had 72 hours to make about 175 images (96 of them were about champions) and he only made 3 in the first 24 hours. That’s the end of day one.

Unfortunately, Sunday was the last day of the jam for us :( I worked until 7:00 PM, I was done with the really core features. Champion movement, health/mana progress bars and of course the world (aka map) of the game. We were Skyping so I asked him if he could send me an image showing the whole game map (with just color filled tiles) to test the map loading / world rendering with the real game map, so I could start working on the multiplayer. He lost about 4 hours trying to decide how many different tiles to use and where to place them on the map. At about 11:00 PM he panicked and asked me to give up :(

It was the first time I don’t submit a game for a Ludum Dare and I don’t like that feeling. I was waiting for this theme (demakes) for a while now :(

Phew! Day one is over and we made some progress on our game :)

We only made Garen today, but we sorted out a lot of things (like the world dimensions and some basic keyboard/mouse controls).

Hello everyone,
we’re making a League of Legends demake. We started about 50 minutes ago…

We wanted to live stream, but unfortunately we won’t due to our slow Internet connection (less than 1 Mbps upload) :( But we found another way so you can check our progress! We’ve set up a page on our website with a screenshot that gets updated every 10 seconds and a Twitter widget for some sort of communication :)

We’re really excited about this Mini Ludum Dare and we already have an idea! RofL (Ring of Legends), a League of Legends demake. We’ll post updates on our progress regularly and maybe live stream sometime this weekend. :)

You Only Get One Planet – Postmortem

In this Ludum Dare, a lot of things went terribly wrong for us :\

You Only Get One Planet (Screenshot)

We’re a team of two, so we were going for the 72 hour jam. Before we even started thinking about a game idea, one of our computers stopped booting Windows (it’s a MacBook and we tried to make a third partition with no success), so we were left with one computer.

We started making the game (it also took us ages to come up with an idea) on the working computer and about 40 hours in, we were stuck on some geometry/math problems that we couldn’t solve. So we deleted almost everything we had and implemented the Nape physics engine (it was the first time we ever used a physics engine in general :O)

Because we were running out of time we focused on the very core features of our game (You Only Get One Planet is about aliens and it doesn’t have UFOs). We managed to have a somewhat polished version of our game with about a couple of hours left. We started taking screenshots for the submission only to realize that one Starling extension we use was causing the game to not work at all in the browser. We almost cried.

Finally, we submitted the very broken version of our game, posted about our problem in the Starling forum and went to bed.

Today, one of the extension’s developers provided a workaround to our problem. We finally have a working version up! It was without a doubt a very disappointing (and exhausting) Ludum Dare experience for us. We didn’t enjoy it at all :(

At least our problems are solved now :)

You Only Get One Planet – Progress Update #2

There are less than 10 hours left (we’re going for the Jam) and we finally have something playable. Not anything fancy, but the basic stuff is done.

About 40 hours in we deleted almost everything we had until then, because we had too many problems, and implemented a physics engine.

We still have to add a score results screen, restart/pause buttons, credits e.t.c. to complete our game. Hopefully, we’ll be done in the next 9 hours :/

You Only Get One Planet – Progress Update

We’re making a game where you have to protect the Earth from meteorites and aliens. We lost a lot of time because we had some problems with the one of our two computers, so now we’re both using one computer :\

This is our second time participating, but our first “We’re in” post. This time, we will try to post updates on our progress regularly :)

We’re going to use…

  • Language: AS3
  • IDE: FlashDevelop
  • Framework: Starling (and Nape if we need physics)
  • Graphics: Paint.NET, Pixelmator, and/or GraphicsGale
  • Audio: Probably Audacity, cgMusic and sfxr/cfxr/bfxr

Oh, and Chronolapse for our timelapse!
