How I made two games for this Ludum Dare…

With the theme announced at 2am UK time, LD takes a lot of planning, dedication and lack of sleep to fully take advantage of all the time you have. I functioned on minimal sleep throughout the 48 hours and was quite happy with the end result. A stressful, panic, plate-spinning game called Breach Lockdown where you have to close bulkheads to save a ship from de-pressurising, saving the crew in the process. You can play it here – Breach Lockdown

Then I went to sleep. On the Monday I awoke and went to the store with my wife Nixxor. Whilst we were there, a severe lack of sleep and a shopping trip did strange things to my brain and in a semi delirious state, I began to sing a song based on a piece of cheese I had picked up.

After singing it solidly for an hour or so, my wife and I decided to make it into a game for the Jam as the window to submit was still open. We would work on it together and see what we could achieve in an afternoon. The result was a crazy little game called Apricot Drop

The two games were VERY different in tone and play styles and Apricot Drop was almost the antidote to playing Breach Lockdown. Instead of being on edge and running around in a panic, you got to calmly pick up and drop fruit and listen to a crazy song on each success. I am very proud of both of these games and now I have caught up on my sleep, I can play them with a clear head and try to imagine… “what was I thinking?!”

I hope you enjoy both of the games :)

Hi all!

Well that was a tough one. I finished with 4 minutes to spare at 1:56am UK time!

Found a couple of bugs this morning after sleeping so did quick fixes on those and have built 64 and 32bit versions of the game for people to play.

Recording a walkthrough with ALL FIVE ENDINGS! (what was I thinking…) and will upload that too.

Until then, please check out my entry! Breach Lockdown

Took a little longer than usual to decide what I am gonna do. Will probably regret that when I have two hours left!

BUT here is my brainstorm and I have decided on a game concept and am starting to build it now :)

I am in but this may be tough…

Hi all,

Since the last LD I have changed jobs and had a baby! This marks the first game jam I will be doing as a dad and I also have to take a large chunk of sunday out for a family gathering… so I have rather a lot to do, in a short amount of time so will try to keep my idea small… HAH!

I like the theme but predict a lot of Ico/Shadow of the colossus esque glowing stones and magical rune games 😉

UE4, Photoshop, bfxr.net, audacity, garage band, and Space Tea.

I will be tweeting from @xopsx and updating here when I can. My LD method has become every 30 mins, Save, tweet, and stretch.

Best of luck to everyone and make some amazing games.

Video Walkthrough – The Cargo Shift

Here is a walkthrough I did of my 48 hour solo competition entry. I know the performance varies on a machine to machine basis so this video shows how I see the game “as intended”.

(But please go play the game if you like what you see 😀 )

“Sticky Keys”

Playing through the entries now and finding several have chosen to use the “Shift” Keys on windows as main actions or controls… I bet a lot of people are seeing the windows sticky keys prompt! Remember you only need to disable this once but it is a good bet that many are doing this right now.

Finished! – The Cargo Shift

I did it!

Uploaded last night (UK TIME) found a few bugs that were small enough to fix and here it is – http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-35/?action=preview&uid=21374

Shift the different cargo shapes into position to fully load each cargo ship before it heads off into space!

Really enjoyed this one. Was jamming at a friends house and all of us went solo. Three games made under one roof in 48 hours! It was great seeing each other’s work come along and so proud we all finished.

If you are interested, the other two games were my by @Wissuk and @ShawtyJon and are here

Enjoy and thanks for all the support!

WIP cargo game!

I need a name for this… but so far it is something like Cargo Shifter or something…

What I got working at the moment is

Cargo selection is random

ship knows when it is full

the preview window shows you next cargo

paths and timings working ok

and it is quite chilled to play! So I may well take a snapshot of this and include it as relax mode with the rules stripped out.

First Prototype

I am happy with how this is going so I am going to go with this idea.

The idea is there are different cargo shapes that must be fit to the space ship. Your job is to shift the shapes into place!

They will bounce off the hull but will attach to cargo points. When the ship is full, it will fly away.

Time to spec this into a bigger game!

I am in – Excited for this one for many reasons…

Hi all!

I am in and hyped!

I am going to do this LD from a friends house where all of us will do the 48 hour solo competition under the same roof! We are still waiting to find out if @catmoo will join us and I want to put a logo in our entries to reflect the location we made it in. SO depending if Catherine can make it or not, our jam logo will be one of these

The other reason I am so excited is that my wife is pregnant and due in about 3 weeks! I am hoping the baby doesn’t arrive early but if it does, this may be the first Jam I pull out of midway! (I Will still try to submit what I have!)

Another reason I am HUGELY excited is…. I will tell you later! (I will edit this post with the announcement when the news is public!)

Usual tools for me

UE4, Photoshop, bfxr.net, audacity, garage band, NBA League Pass and Space Tea.

I want to do something interesting with Audio this time around so will focus on that and see what I can come up with depending on the theme.

I will be tweeting from @xopsx and updating here when I can. My LD method has become every 30 mins, Save, tweet, and stretch.

Best of luck to everyone and see you all for the Jam! Make some amazing games dammit!
