Yes! What a ride!

Little game called “I am the Bankster!” was born!

I had a lot of fun! I got a chance to learn lot of interesting stuff about game jams, and stress test my little engine.

Game also ended up quite nice! You take a role of bankster, and collect money from villagers(middle class workers…), until you are hunted down by occupy wall street activist…(witch wield swards for some reason…).

It sounds boring but it plays like action game.

(I also managed to record some sound! )

Now lets rank same games!

So it looks like I will manage to get something running on time…

Here is little teaser:

6 hours left…

I have 14 polishing points… sound… and 2 removed features on the list…

Back to work!

Deril’s rush preparation

I discovered this Game jam couple of days ago… and did not have much time to prepare.

What I did – I skim/read “The Game Jam Survival Guide“!   It is a good read!  (but too expensive IMHO… )

So… I will not be able to prepare asset library, sound library, or game idea library… I will not even have 48 hours… :(
But it is ok! It will only help focus on other fun stuff!

What I do want to prepare well before the start – is my project starting point. I will be using prototype of mvcExpress LIVE.
(Basically it is MVC framework on adrenaline…. it has game loop tools build in, and will have self testing capabilities…)

With it I will put couple of statements under test:

  1. “Quick code and  poor OOP is usually better approach to reach the finish line in game jam.”
  2. “MVC is not good for games packed with rapid action.”
  3. “You don’t have much room for test driven development while rush coding…”

mvcExpress LIVE framework is designed to disprove those statements, and of course – the fact that I am an author of framework will help a lot…

I think… good framework actually will save time because structure, linking, and architecture is clear for you, and managed by framework. (and mvcExpress has smallest boilerplate code overhead, compared with other AS3 frameworks.) Ok… MVC is not good for games with game loop… but mvcExpress LIVE is not strict MVC framework and it  has solutions for this problem. (I also hope I will manage to add framework level testing features today…)

I will tell you how it will go.

I was listening for RugueLike radio about game jams and decided to try it out myself!

I have done small games jams before… but it was long time ago.. and not true. (I was doing it alone… in the basement…)

Some of my previous game jams.

BallDrop prototype v0.000001

Tank – tree destroyer (EXE, flash player 7 projector)

MouseRPG v0.00002

  • Language: ActionScript 3
  • IDE: FlashDevelop
  • Libraries : mvcExpress
  • Graphics: programmers art! (red, blue boxes and circles!)
  • Audio: fatal error… null pointer reference.
  • Food: Whatever my wife will put in front of me…
My goals:
  • try Ludum dare.
  • try mvcExpress in prototyping/rush programming.
  • try to convince my wife to put something edible in front of me… (this might be challenging…)
  • try to convince my kids not to climb on me while I am jamming… (this might be impossible…)

Good luck everyone!
