I finished my game, WAKE UP! Spread the TRUTH, with 9 minutes to spare. The game is about being an Internet netizen who only gets the TRUTH from REAL web sites not controlled by THEM. Spread your social media influence to achieve maximum, uh, enlightenment? Anyway, check out my game! Let me know what you think of it! Good luck to everyone else! I look forward to playing your games :)

Almost there…

My game is almost done… just a couple more graphical improvements, title and ending screen, and I’m all set! This has turned out very well! I can’t wait to see what people think of it!

Game update…

The game I am making is about being one of those awful people who share terrible information on social media. Watch as your horrible influence spreads! I need to tweak the mechanics and add more flourish to the game components, but the core is well done.

To Dare or not to Dare…

I’ll probably LD it up this weekend! This will be the first LD I’ve done since learning Game Maker. Previously¬†I used to use C#/XNA, and it was a bit of a hassle just setting up the infrastructure for any game I worked on, even though I got really good at it. I use many more user friendly (and mostly free) tools now, including but not limited to:

  • Piskelapp.com
  • paletton.com
  • pxtone
  • musagi
  • bfxr.net
  • Game Maker Studio Pro
  • paint.net
  • Dropbox
  • Pyxeledit
  • freesound.org
  • Reaper (possibly)

Since I am able to build prototypes for games much faster with these tools than before, I should be able to make a much better game. We’ll see! Good luck everyone!

Finished my first Ludum Dare game!

I’m so excited that I actually finished it. My game, A AAA Aardvark Construction Co. is a construction puzzler where you have 10 seconds to place tetrad-shaped rooms to build a house and the score is based on various factors. I didn’t get all the features I wanted into it (programming pathfinding your first time is hard) but I’m really satisfied with how I packaged it up anyway. I hope people play and enjoy it!

Now I’m off to treat myself and then to play some games!

I uploaded a short video of my prototype in action.

For this game, my construction puzzler:

Progress so far…

My game is a construction puzzler called A AAA Aardvark Construction Co. In it you play a shitty construction company who has to build a house in 10 seconds for owners based on the shapes you get. It doesn’t show any doors or windows yet, but they will be integral in the value of the house that is judged after the 10 seconds are over.

So far it’s really goddamn hard. But that’s okay. I will put in difficulty settings and probably it will still be too hard; I can’t even get a coherent house going but that’s part of the fun.

Here is a screenshot of the work in progress:

Got my concept all fleshed out, got whiteboxed test sprites, got my framework (variables, arrays, graphics placement) in place, got my asset list done. I’m terrified that my idea’s been done before but I’m too afraid to go looking. I’ll just keep on working my project JUST IN CASE it’s something new.

Now for sleep so I can get up and get to it early early early tomorrow!

*edit: I just remembered that my idea has been somewhat done before so I am a bit deflated. But it’s not EXACTLY the same idea so I will press on. Confounding game community and its bright ideas!

I’m down for the Dare (for the first time)

This will be my first Ludum Dare. I’ve been too afraid of failure before now! I’ll be using C#/XNA Visual Studio Express 2010 for development, Paint.NET for graphics, bfxr/sfxr for sound effects, Audacity + drum machine for music, and Mountain Dew/5-hour Energy and Pizza for energy. Good luck everyone! I’m excited!
