New 3D Game Art Tutorial – Modular Walls

As promised, a new tuesday, a new 3D Quick Game Art tutorial ^^ This time around I’m doing Modular Walls 😀 I’ll be covering all asssets needed for a imple Dungeon Crawler game (Including Character and Weapons)

Let me know what you guys think \o I’ll release a new one next tuesday covering some decoration asset for the dungeon 😀

Finally playable and starting to look really good *_*

Alright, so the game will also have a tower defense part, in which you can put down towers to help you vanquish your foes (diseases!) to help heal our host. Did these 4 variations on tower body and 8 variations on tower heads, so we can mix and match to make different towers.

Sebastian sent me a video with some of the gameplay, looking good :) Can’t wait to play it ^^

Got the first level kinda blocked out. Used my PCG to generate the walls/playable area then scattered around the decoration by hand. When I wake up will do more decoration and improve more on the level, right now it’s 4am and I need sleep xD

Ok, I haven’t finished as much as I would like to have finished this far… But I’m pretty happy with the things I did finish so far.

Got a few level decoration assets, Modular wall assets, floor, and these 3 characters (1 good guy and 2 baddies).

Got my level generator setup with my wall tiles, once I finish more decoration assets I’ll feed into it and see if it spits out an interesting level. For now… To model more decoration assets!

So this time I’m working with the awesome Sebastian Lague. I didn’t get much done after the theme was released because it was 22pm over here. Sebastian got it worse, it was 3am over there. We did 2 hours of brainstorm and got to our idea. I went to sleep and he went on coding.

Our interpretation of “Beneath the Surface” is kind of “beneath the surface of our skin”. So the player will control some sort of medicine/molecules trying to cure the owner of the body. Each level would have a different disease.

So today I woke up 7AM and started working on the  character. Made this little guy:

He’s a happy little fellow. Using the same Rig and animations I made some variations on the mesh/textures to get some bad guys (diseases?)

Ps. The game doesn’t quite have a name yet, just testing the idea of “molecular”… =x

So, with 2 enemy variations and a character, I’ll start knocking out some modular level assets 😀 I’ve been streaming all I’ve been doing so far, and also using chrono lapse to record a timelapse of it. http://www.twitch.tv/danielsnd/

I’m definetly in!!

Will be using Unity, Maya & Photoshop. I hope this time we get a good theme, last 2 times I ended up resorting to time limit to make sense of the theme D: “You only get 1 minute” and “10 seconds” ><;

So, I usually try and record my first impressions when I play a indie game for the first time, as a fellow developer I know how good it feels to see someone else playing your game, and how much we can learn from it, seeing where they fail, and what they end up missing/not understanding.

Last LD I made a Google Form and asked for people to submit links to their games there, and went on rating and recording through that list.

Phew, lots of trouble, but the game is there! Even managed to include an android build in the last minutes XD (Haven’t tested it, but it’s there,  lol, maybe it works.)

It’s really short though :( wish I had more time to do levels, the game can be beat within 2 minutes.

Well, at least we had a lot of fun doing it ^^ Can’t wait for next Ludum Dare.

Rigged D: Late

Well… at least he is rigged D: Now need to animate, if I have some time will work a bit more on textures

Game is going terribly slowly, got the movement working, but to get attacks working need the animations, will call the attacks from Mecanim Events, so… yeah, stopped coding and went to do character/rig/animations. Hope I have time to finish the game, but I hoped to have accomplished way more by now, so not sure… Hope to have something playable tomorrow D:

Spent since the theme announcement brainstorming, just to get back to the first idea we had…

So, you’re a action hero, like those from the old action movies that can kills entire armies and solve all the problems by yourself.

Some random mission has appeared, and only you can solve it!

“The daughter of the president has been kidnapped and only you can save her!”

or

“The bomb is armed and only you can get to it in time!”

“There is a meteor coming for the white house and only you can destroy it!”

They ask:

“You much time do you need to do this?”

You have a few options, 3 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes… but whatever you answer…

“YOU ONLY GET ONE”

It’d be a beat’em up/shooter, not sure if top down or 3rd person yet, just know for sure it won’t be first person. Randomly generated environments, not very long, since you’ll only have 1 minute for each mission.

So, that’s the idea, here is to hoping I can actually get it done before time is up D:

I’m in!

I’ll be jamming with my lovely girlfriend that will be doing the art, this time I’ll be both doing the art and programming :) Hope we can complete something.

I’m using maya, unity (C#) and photoshop, she’s using modo and photoshop.

It’s the final countdown!

5 Hours and a half left! Just finished up all the enemy variations!

At this point, pretty much all the stuff that needed to be modeled and textured, is modeled and textured. And as Chevy rushes to add everything to the game, me and BambooBear aren’t quite sure what else to create anymore… xD

I guess now we’re going to polish/add more detail to some of the stuff we made, maybe make 1 or 2 panels with those render images explaining the game. Can’t wait to see the final build with everything in place :3  This is the first time me and BambooBear join a Game Jam and it’s all been so exciting ^^ It’s awesome to see how much we can accomplish when we have a tight deadline and plan things accordingly :)

Also has been an awesome experience working with Chavy, he not only codes super fast, but also does things thinking of how to make things easier to do art-wise, like the choice of the type of enemies that don’t really require a complex rig/animation.

I’m very happy to be a part of this ^^ and hopefully I’ll be here again next time \o

I admit I spent way more time on this render than I should (given the time we have to finish the game)… but DAAAAAMN this looks awesome! (Click for full resolution :3)

Done with all the enemies and props we had planned originally, now doing some renders (3 or 4) for the introduction/story.  :3 Chevy just got the first build with the room generation and such up, (Still no enemies generation, but getting there XD) Pretty excited to see how it’s going to play in the end :)

Finished off another enemy 😀 Now to create some variations, as soon as I finish those we’ll have 7 “different” enemies in the game  ^^ So pumped!
