We’ll be using LynxJS for our library and Photoshop programmer art. Audio will probably be done with timbre.

Baby Simulator 2k14

Last night I finished up my second LD48 entry, Baby simulator 2014!


Now with 20% more baby!

You have just given birth to a beautiful child and it’s up to you to make sure it grows up to be successful! Be careful though, because you only get one!

Don’t do anything that might cause it to fail in life or resent you or you’ll end up in a horrible retirement home where the staff burns you with cigarettes and steals your things! Do you have what it takes to be a parent?

I’ve added in a lot of content and features, and there’s a couple specific endings if you name your baby one of the following

  • Notch
  • Kim Kardashian
  • Lady Gaga
  • Beyonce
  • Charlie Sheen
  • Skrillex
  • and more!

I had a lot of fun this LD and even got more time to rest than the last one. All in all I’d call it a success and since I’ve been getting a lot of positive feedback, I’m looking into turning it into a full featured game, providing I can find someone to make up for my lack of artistic ability!

Since there’s less than 6 hours left for the compo, it’s come time for the final demo! This one has more endings, two new events, a lot of bug fixes, and most importantly: the stats actually update now!

I’ve released another demo of BabySim2k14! There’s a lot more outcomes for the choices you make as well as more random events. I’ve also added in a lot more stats, another timed event, and there are now real endings!

It’s almost halfway over which means it’s around the time where I start going slightly insane after working this hard for such a long time, so I decided to go for a walk!

I think one of the things I love about this competition more than anything is how close to your own mind you get. It’s a little unnerving for some people, but you really begin to get a closer look at what drives you to create games. You experience the entire process in two short days: the first great idea, the excitement of having a new concept to work with, the frustration of smoothing out everything, the self doubt of whether you can really do something or not. That deadline looming over you just pushes you to continue no matter what obstacles you run into. Nothing else matters, and you truly live in the moment while making your game.

Going on this walk gets me back to earth again and to remind myself that though it seems like a lifetime, it’s only been one day in the real world and that I’ve only got one left. It reminded me of why I’m doing this in the first place and what my goals are for the jam.

I hope you all are having as much fun as I am, I’m going back to development!

Baby Sim 2k14 Demo 1

I’ve finally gotten the first demo of Baby Sim 2k14 online! Right now it has all the tutorial content and the basics of the game progression, but it’s still incredibly bare without the random events and alignment calculator. However, I feel that I’ve gotten a lot done already and that I’m going to have more than enough time to finish this game and polish it a bit!


If you could take a moment to give it a try and take the survey at the end, that would be wonderful! Right now I do have it set so that after the first year, the game will move a lot faster, so don’t worry when you start jumping a year at a time! Thanks everyone, and I hope you all are having good luck with your own games!

Baby Sim 2k14 Update #1

After oversleeping and only getting an additional 3 hours of work in, bringing the total to 5, I’m seeing quite a bit of progress made on the simulator! Right now I’m still building the tutorial but most of my time has been devoted toward getting the base in place rather than writing content. Now that the base is almost completely finished, all I’ll have to do is write the dialogue and fine tune the events!


As I had guessed before, this is getting out of hand pretty quickly, but I’m having a lot of fun with it! As for right now, I’m going to run and get a coffee and some food!

As I learned from the last LD Compo, I can’t function if I haven’t slept, so I’m gonna go to bed early and get a decent amount of sleep.

So it took me a bit to come up with an idea, considering this theme was… er… not ideal for me, but thanks to a bit of help from the community and those watching my livestream, I’m now working on the game Baby Simulator 2k14!

Since I only have to work one shift this weekend at the restaurant, I’ll have enough time to get an entry in for my second LD! Hopefully I can do better than my last entry!

I’ll be making a game in HTML5 Using my still in alpha library, LynxJS. As for art I’ll be using a combination of pixen and photoshop and for sound I’ll just be making my own samples.

LD48 LynxJS Post-Mortem

I’ve already written a post-mortem about what I personally learned from LD#27 and creating my first entry, Food court hell. However, I haven’t gone over what I’ve learned that will affect the future of my engine, LynxJS. After much thought and consideration here’s what I’ve decided is important to LynxJS development.

LynxJS is ready to make games

Originally I advised people against trying LynxJS as I thought it was extremely buggy, and basically useless. However, I would not have been able to complete the dare had I not used this library. I saved quite a bit of time compared to if I had simply prototyped a game with pure javascript, and much of my work was already done for me in terms of collisions, object handling and asset management. LynxJS, though a small library of only 1500 lines of code, is capable of game creation. That being said…


LD#27 Post-mortem

As someone who just completed his first LD48 compo I’ve got a lot of thoughts going through my head right now. I’ve been looking at the last two days that just flew by and though I was tired, frustrated, and kept forgetting to feed myself, I think it’s one of the best experiences of my (short) adult life.

I created the game “Food Court Hell,” a top down shooter with multiple enemies, powerups and game modes. For having only 48 hours to create a game, I’m quite proud of myself for what I did. Though it may not be the best work of art in the compo, it’s going to hold a special place in my heart as the first game I coded completely by myself. There are a lot of things that went well with the competition and a lot of things that didn’t, but the important thing is that I finished and now have a good prototype for a new project.

Objective Complete! I reached my only goal of finishing the dare! I couldn’t be happier!

The game I submitted is “Food Court Hell,” a top down shooter featuring multiple difficulties, addictive gameplay, and programmer art!

This is the last demo I’ll be posting before the final submission of Food Court Hell!All I have left to do now is add the enemy artwork and add more enemies/bosses if I have time. Post compo I’m planning on continuing development since I have a lot of ideas for it.

As usual please submit any bugs you find and let me know what you think of it overall. Is it too easy? too hard?  What do you like? what don’t you like? If a tree falls in the middle of the woods and no one’s around to hear it does Gary Busey still exist???
