I suppose I should say I’m in!

I’ve never been very good at “finishing” Ludum Dare, but I’ve always been sure to at least try something when I have the time. Well, I have lots of time this weekend so I figured I’d take another stab at it. Expect very little because I’m essentially going to be trying to learn a new engine this weekend :S

Tools:

  • IDE: I dunno yet πŸ˜€
  • Language I dunno yet πŸ˜€
  • Engine: I dunno yet πŸ˜€
  • Music/Sound: Probably none πŸ˜€
  • Graphics: Paint.net?? πŸ˜€

Can you tell I’m prepared? I still have half an hour, it’s all good!

I’m going to *try* to compete

Unfortunately, this LD is the same weekend as a race I’m doing on Saturday, as well as a day of volunteering I’ll be doing for most of the day sunday. This means I’m losing about…. 5 hours on Saturday and another 9 hours on Sunday. I was never very fast in previous LD events either, so losing that time is pretty devastating πŸ˜›

But that’s not going to stop me from staying up Friday to participate in some of the excitement, as well as at least getting something down on paper to maybe make later. I’m also planning on streaming when I am at my desk and actually working. I tried it last time and my friends seemed to enjoy peeking in on me throughout the weekend, so I figured I would keep it going.

Anyway, with all of that out of the way, let me get to my tools. Oh, I forgot to mention. I’m going toΒ try for the compo but with losing so much time, I may try to finish on Monday. But of course, I’m seeing friends on Monday since it’s my last week at home before I leave for university πŸ˜› What a perfectly busy weekend. Okay, tools:

Language: Java, mostly likely. Over the past month I’ve been learning SFML with C++, but I don’t think I’m quite ready to get started using that, especially with my additional time constraints.
IDE: Eclipse because who doesn’t love Eclipse?
Graphics: Photoshop, probably.
Audio:Β Bfxr since I’ve never been very good with sound or music. If I can find the time, I’ll try doing random things at the end, but who knows. For the most part, nobody should expect any sound in my game πŸ˜›
Platform: Mac
Stream:Β http://www.twitch.tv/josephroquedev

Well, that’s it! Good luck to everybody this weekend, I’ll see you all again tomorrow night!

Lead the Bunny! Post-mortem

title

Well, it’s finally done :) I was having some troubles last night with the jar so I didn’t make a post then as few people could have actually played, but it’s all been sorted out now.

ANYWAY, meet Lead (like a pencil) the Bunny, whom you have to lead (the opposite of follow) through a series of treacherous levels, with dangers waiting at all corners. Jump, dash and hop your way to victory as you traverse the 14 levels I managed to finish.

What went right

  • This was my third attempt at Ludumdare and the first time I actually finished!
  • Everything I tried to implement worked
  • My idea came fairly quickly
  • I actually managed to get through most of the game making process with few bugs!
  • I am very, very proud of my bunny. I am no graphics pro but my bunny is lovely πŸ˜›

What went wrong

  • I was away for a lot of the weekend so I didn’t have as much time as I would have liked
  • In the end, I only had 2 hours to finish up and start making levels, so there’s only 14 levels. But they’re easy enough to continue making if I feel like continuing
  • I never had any time to implement any sounds, not even simply ones from BFXR like I planned
  • When I went to upload, the jar simply would not work. Turns out I had an extra slash when loading images, which Eclipse was fine with, but windows was not πŸ˜›

Final Thoughts
I had a lot of fun. It was great sitting down and coding and watching my game come together so quickly. I’m only in grade 12 and just finished my Computer Science course last semester, and the game I made for that took forever to get through. Admittedly, it had a lot more but this is still a full game and really well done (in my opinion) for my first java game outside of school.
If you’d like to play, the link is here:Β http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-26/?action=preview&uid=5827
And I have a couple screenshots below :)

This will be my second ludumdare and hopefully my first finished one! I didn’t really get into the last one as I knew very little Java and tried to use Actionscript, which I hadn’t touched in years πŸ˜› But now I’ve got Java under my belt and am in the process of learning C++ so I’ll use that if I feel confident enough with it by the time the competition rolls around.

Language: C++ or Java

Libraries: None

IDE: Eclipse

Graphics: Paint.Net or Photoshop

Sound: Bfxr

First Ludum Dare approaches

I’m not exactly new to the site, I’ve been around spectating for a few Ludum Dares, I think since the 18th. But I finally took the time to learn a programming language and practice my skills in making a game so I guess I’m finally gonna participate. I originally planned on entering some time ago by making a game with Flash but now I’ve got Java under my belt so I’m going with that.

My weapons of choice will be:

  • Language: Java
  • Graphics: Paint.NET
  • Sound: SFXR

I haven’t had a chance to look into any other libraries yet but I may familiarize myself with some before it all gets started and consider using one to make my first competition a little easier on myself πŸ˜›

Anyway, best of luck to all and I look forward to just a weekend of getting away with my code :)
