Scrapping all progress

Welp, everything I’ve made so far I’ve hated, so scrapping everything one last time and disregarding the theme, it’s holding me back from making anything good tbh. I’d prefer to make something I enjoyed making rather than something I hated just so it fitted the theme, so here goes.

Looking forward to seeing everyone’s take on the theme.

Kind of got tired of the idea I was running with and just focused on art and sound, which was fun and all, but I enjoy LD much more when I’m making a game and not pretty stuff (can never do both…) Hopefully December will be better!

Oh well, look forward to playing everyones  game (: Time for sleep now

Porknight – Post Mortem

This is a little late, but it’s been a busy week! Anywho, my initial theme reaction was… disappointment, no issue with the theme in and of itself, it’s just I’d made a game during LD31 which consisted of shapes and shifting and it would’ve been perfect. I don’t really like doing the same thing twice… but accidentally started making a similar game I made for LD33 as well as probably fitting better with LD34’s theme, not going well at this point.

Despite not being overly fond of the idea at first, I began with making the character, as the character got larger as he ate, I had to make 5 animations for walking, for a single character, oh god why. This was thankfully not too painful (although I had to repeat this when I decided to change colours… twice) and turned out really nice, not overly fond of the skinniest form as it lacks character, but the larger ones are pretty adorable.

After the first day I struggled to make game play out of this idea, I eventually had an idea of escorting a king through a forest to a castle, the castle however was cut as arting taking too much time. With the addition of a couple of barricades and a few enemies, this could be a game! But first let’s cut all but one enemy, ’cause time!

The fighting is quite simple, slash uses stamina, the more heavier you are, the slow movement and stamina regen, but higher damage output and max health pool. This mixed in with keeping your king alive and also trying to keep pace with him, makes for some slightly enjoyable game play… kinda. Then a sprinkle of sound effects (all made with my beautifully bad voice), a bit of quick music and a title screen which was well worth the 2 hours it took to create and … oh god no time for testing, quickly upload and cry.

All in all, it turned out a lot better than I was expecting. I’ve had a lot of positive feedback which made me feel a lot better as I fell ill on the Saturday of the compo and it helped. I’ll probably work on a post jam version, mainly to add the art that never got finished and expand on the game play that was designed but never implemented. Go play it if you like, but honestly I’ve had more than enough ratings already, so maybe go browse the least ratings, they need it more! Thanks for reading 😀

Eat Sheep & Die Post-mortem

Posted by
Thursday, August 27th, 2015 6:27 pm

Well, I had a pretty good time last weekend despite not being enthused by the theme, I ended up making a game based around the idiom “A Wolf in Sheep’s clothing” and it turned out all right!

My basic concept was you eat sheep, the more you eat, the more wool you wear and so the sheep are less scared of you, but you move slower. I had a few ideas of how the wool would be removed, like  other wolves thinking you’re a sheep, taking damage (wire fences, angry farmers, charging rams) and maybe I’ll add a shearing sequence if I had time (I didn’t!)

I wanted it to look cute and simple but I wasn’t sure I could make it work, so I broke my one rule and made graphics before any sort of code. This wasn’t so bad as the simple style worked and was quite quick to make, plus the cute art really contrasted against the brutal sheep murder that the game is.  yay.

I worked almost non stop on the Sunday, but looking back, it would’ve been a good idea to have done a lot more on Saturday, maybe next time I’ll skip sleeping, I always feel at the end I’m always 2 hours short of time ): Due to this I never managed to test it properly and realise how necessary the shearing event was, I’ve since uploaded a post-compo version with it in and it really adds to the challenge of the game. Overall, I’m really pleased with the game, much more than my previous entry, going to definitely stick to 2D games  when going solo, 3D is just too painful.

I’ve had some great feedback so far, thanks to all who’ve played it, and for those who haven’t….

Play it here 😉

Extinguished post-mortem

So I wasn’t 100% in to begin with, but I liked the theme, so I went with it.

When I woke, for some reason, all I could think was “Fire Extinguisher” and so I made a game from that. Initial concept was quite simple, you have to put out fires in this station situated on another planet, however it has been breached by some alien monsters, all you have for protection is a fire extinguisher and your manager doesn’t see that as an excuse to not work.

I’m liking the visual style I managed to set up in the time available, more meshes would have been good, but I was running out of time and needed to build the level still.

The manager was going to contact you over radio during the game, but I ran out of time and didn’t manage to do any audio ): Rushed so much towards the end, I was way too slow on the first day.

At the end of the day, had a fantastic time! Now back to my assignments I put off for this o.o

If you don’t have windows, I made a video!

Even though I joined late (I forgot…) I managed to pull out a game from somewhere! I literally made the first second game that came to mind and just ran with it, even though I wasn’t feeling it much at first.

My game is called RGB and is a little like Geometry Wars & Super Hexagon (apparently), so pretty much an arcade shooting game, with a twist?! It’s quite a challenge, it is beat-able too! I managed it eventually (:

Better get playing some games! You can find mine here

Windows only tho ):

I Finished!
