Haystack Quest Devlog #1

Hello everyone,

We have worked quite hard for last two days and for the first time did not share anything related to the game but here I am before going to sleep, decided to post some screens of our strange mix of genres game Haystack Quest.

We started with a very simple aim, we want to do a multiplayer game, with story in it and of course “One Room”.
Later we decided that it would be a very cool game where one of the players is playing the game master and places objects in the map.
In the end we also included cards and resources to use cards to spawn objects or use powers.

It will be playable up to 4 players online, 1 being the game master.

Here are some screens from our development so far:
First models.

Multiplayer works at this point. Started to spawn objects.

Menu design.

We have 2 enemy types and player interactions work.

Hello again,
I go on playing your games in 5 minutes on stream.
You can come and send new entries but I will play them after 12 games I already have.
I won’t be talking (I don’t have a proper place) but I’ll be in the chat and I think it’s still valuable to see how I do in your games.
Stream Here

Note: Do not post your game in comments.

Lost Contact – Progress 4

We finally named the game it’s Lost Contact.
While my friend was fighting with code and trying to make AI work properly, I finished animations for enemy and created the main menu. I also found music for main menu and in-game. Then, prepared icons for in-game interface.

Here is the website:

There is stuff missing but the core game is in place.
We have to do an intro, game over and scoreboard, find sound effects and that’s kinda it.

Here how it looked like 5 hours ago:

Today I started with creating all tower types in the game. We decided there will be some upgrades to some towers.

There are;
– blockades that only to block enemies,
– connections that provides a connection to the main power source,
– turrets that simply attack enemies,
– mining facilities that give you extra resources by time,
– light tower that opens up a larger area on the map.

Here you can also see main source that you start with and exit that you are trying to reach.

My friend coded the visibility and AI spawning & pathfinding. (And many other small things)
We put things together, here is an early screen from the game.

I also modeled and mapped the enemy. He is waiting to be animated. He is a victim of my speed modeling but I like him.

In the game you play as an advanced spaceship AI after a massacre of humans by this unknown alien race. As AI your aim is to protect the ship till it reaches its destination by ‘growing’ your defenses to connect the main power source with control sphere. We also plan to keep controls within ‘two buttons’, LMB and RMB.

Does anyone have an idea what we should name this alien race?

My programmer pal kept working on building mechanics and I created a base for the game area but now it’s time to sleep for both of us.

Here you can see what I did.

It’s quite detailed actually. (gif)

We were too late to start this time but I think we will manage. Wish luck!
The first thing I did was to prepare some modular pieces for levels.

Here is the screenshot from Unity. I was checking how they will look like in the game.

This was just a test though. My pal will code a generator so every level will look different.

What kind of game we are doing? It’s kind of a turn-based base defense game. Enemies are coming from darkness and attacking your base and other turrets till you find the exit to the level. You have to make sure all turrets have power and somewhat connected to the source. This way it’s growing from where you started. We are planning to put various types of turrets however not decided what types.

Now I’m going to do something with turrets and then enemies.
Good luck everyone.

I keep working even though I don’t have any hope finishing this. It’s still fun :)

I have my dialogue system working thanks to Jerome Bretheau. I also got my music from freemusicarchive. Two tracks, one from Kai Engel and the other from Alan Singley.

What is left? I have to model 11 characters. It will probably be without animations for now. Then to place them on the map. Write their dialogues. Build the logical connections for puzzles with items. There are also 3 places that teleport you to another location, that is also to be done. Well this is kinda it.

This game would be so easy with a programmer partner. Seriously.

Look at and Pick up seem to work. I also did the main menu very quickly. Creating item models. There are 9 items in total and it’s a point & click adventure. What a shame…

I have finally managed to implement a simple pathfinding system. Now there are boxes for inventory. Simple object interaction is ready.

I still don’t have any NPCs, inventory system, dialogues, main menu, music and sound effects so hm.. ALMOST DONE!

I’m a lonely artist here and I’m struggling with coding A LOT. Tried to implement a pathfinding because it was required but now there is a spike at the point it calculates a path. Very frustrated… The game looks nice but it’s just a walking simulator at this point. If there is any C# programmers out there who wants to help me I would really appreciate. I’m going for jam and would like to work on other art stuff + writing dialogues.

I think I’m not gonna make it.

I’m done with the environment. Now all I need is some invisible colliders to limiting areas. I’ve also added a move marker and some camera effects :)

+ characters and puzzle chain are written down!

(Still so scared of dialogue and inventory system though..)

(8mb is not enough for my gifs :P)

I did some coding. I’m not even rusty, I’m a complete amateur. However managed to make character and camera movement in the end. Here is how it looks like. She is alive! (Reminding again that this is going to become a point & click adventure game about a little girl, Hope. She is *SPOILERS*)

I have no idea if I’m going good or not. I finished 75% of the level except NPCs. I’ve done a walk cycle for Hope. That’s it. I think I’ll get into programming her movement with camera. It will be a point and click by the way, I don’t want a WASD control for this game.

Here is the progress on level and walking Hope 😉
