So this was our third Ludum Dare, and as always we learned new, mostly important things. Some stuff went good, some went okay, but some things in our game couldn’t be achieved. So here’s the sum of Ludum Dare 28 from our perspective.

What went GOOD:

Game code was finished by the end of second day. The game had very good performance (Over 1000 fps) with a lot of sprites, technically the game was very optimized. We chose a very hard kind of game, a logical platformer, and we kind of succeeded. Physics worked, map loading and stuff like that too. Personally I think, that our idea wasn’t bad either, but it was very hard to make and I only realized that when I started creating the maps 6 hours before submission time.

What went BAD:

I still can’t figure out why, but mobs just don’t work. The AI code is working, but they won’t shoot, when they are supposed to be shooting and they just stand there like idiots. Map editor took WAAAAAY too much time to make, and we didn’t really have enough time to make the maps in it (Oh, the irony!). For some reason, collision detection only worked with positive Y coords, but I made the maps so that there are no negative Y coords.

Overall, we kind of succeeded. Learned a lot of things, like that I have to make a sprite batcher, and some OGL stuff could be done better. Looking forward for the next LD, meanwhile I’m not going to work on this game anymore, instead I’ll try to make another one with a simpler concept one weekend, just to simulate how it would have gone if we had a simpler concept.

If you want to try out our game, you can find it here: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-28/?action=preview&uid=31550 – BoxBorg returns home.

Have a nice day! :)

Progress so far

Been’ working on our game since 3am, now it’s 5:45pm and it seems like we are moving very efficiently. What is done:

Physics: Physics is completely done, collision detection is working

Graphics / Lighting: Every graphics stuff is done, Sprite loading, animating, SpriteSheeting stuff like that yea

Map Loading: Map loading is completely done, using XML files we are capable of making maps very easy, we can modify GUI in every map, put enemies down, Sprites, animations stuff like that

What isn’t done:

Entity loading: We’re planning on making this little game as moddable / configurable as possible, so every enemy, ally, weapon and entities like that will be loaded from files, but this isn’t even started yet.

Story: Story is being written, I can say more when it will be done.

Maps: No maps are done(except for the first one).

Weapons: Will do it ASAP.
