I’ve had not much activity during the holidays, but I finally managed to rate 100 games. It’s been an amazing experience. This is my first Ludum Dare and one of the surprises for me has been realizing that the rating part of the jam is equally or even more fun than developing the game. I’ve been rating games showed in the main play & rate page with “default” sorting.

Here are some of the games I enjoyed the most.


Mordor Must Resist!



I loved this game because it’s a good example of what Ludum Dare should be. It’s a simple concept but very well executed. The artwork and sound fit well in the theme. The gameplay is simple but fun, I played it for hours.




This is my favorite game so far. I loved the gameplay, very innovative and fun. Loved the tiny graphics and the small ant colony feeling. It’s full of nice details. True gem!

My Little Terrorist

Another cool game with interesting mechanics and a lot of black humor. I love crafting games and unusual game mechanics.


I liked this games because the idea is similar to the one I used for my game, but this was much better executed. It had better gameplay, graphics and sound. And it was really fun!


Note: A simple idea
I can see it’s going to be impossible to rate all the games. My realistic goal is to reach 200 before the deadline. It’s sad not having time to rate all the games. It would be nice have multiple rating stages so we all could play at least the best games. For example, we can have a first stage of 5 days with all the games, then another 5 days stage with only only half of the games, the best rated from the previous stage and so on until we all rate the top n games. What do you think about it? (Note: you probably have discussed this in the past, sorry if I missed that).

I did it! Last week I was finally able to finish a game for Ludum Dare. I’m really happy, it was my major goal this time. I have participated previously but couldn’t finish for different reasons. The first time, my project was too ambitious. Next time, I had other urgent things to do. This time, I decided to go for something very very simple. I decided to write something between Space Invaders and Galaxian, where you actually played the aliens. This was part of the “you are the enemy” theme. I really loved the theme, by the way.


What went right:

  • I finished! That’s the best thing!
  • I made something simple.
  • I started using very simple graphics and decided to improve them later only if there was time.
  • I could come up with a design pretty quickly, this allowed me to spend more time on coding and creating graphics.
  • I created a simple plan and was able to follow it on time.

What went wrong

  • Game mechanics and controls. The controls didn’t fit quite right with the game. The game mechanics could have been improved.
  • No sound :( I didn’t have time for it.
  • Final game had some bugs, because I tweaked the controls at the last minute.
  • I had bugs with other browsers that I didn’t detect until the last minute.
  • Sunday was significantly less productive than Saturday and Friday night. I was really tired and took a lot of breaks. Probably because I had a lot of work the previous week. I will try to take a rest before the compo next time.
  • I’m not an expert with the tools I used (Dart + HTML5). That slowed me down with the code. And the engine I wrote is still very immature.

What I learned

  • Playing and rating games is equally or even more fun than writing the game. I love to see such explosion of creativity!
  • The community rocks! Thanks for everything.

I’m done! I’m not super satisfied with the results, but I’m done and that was the goal for this competition, to finish. I will later write a postmortem for this entry. Also I’m going to upload the timelapse soon!

Bed time

I’m really tired, I’m going to sleep now. I have 60% of the game play done. I wish I had done more. I still don’t have sound nor animations. And I have a million details to polish. Tomorrow it’s going to be an interesting day. This is my TODO list ordered by priority:

  • Finish buying of new enemies
  • Add healing action to healers
  • Add actions for mages: slowdown and barrier.
  • Add life bar and level for the ship
  • Add better AI for the ship
  • Add a menu
  • Balance the gameplay
  • Add animations
  • Add sounds (no music)

This list is probably bigger than what I can handle tomorrow, but I’ll do my best. I’ve seen awesome screenshots of other games, you guys rock!

I’m progressing slow. Probably I’m not going to finish all the features I initially planned, but I think I can finish something before the deadline, again, the goal is simplicity. Here is one more screenshot of the progress:

I’m slowly progressing, I have some very basic setup for the game, my code is messy, my base code is very immature and I’m not an expert with this technology. If things go bad, I will have to cut several features of my game. Again, my goal is to finish something.

Brainstorm on paper

I love the theme this time. As first step I’ve been doing some brainstorming on paper to get some ideas.



I want to do something simple, because my main goal is to finish the game. I wanted something like Space Invaders, but playing the aliens. I’m going to mix something of tower defense to the game.  Now, let’s start coding!

This is my second time. Last time I gave up, but here I’m going to try again. I don’t care if I do something extremely simple, I just want to finish this time. I’m using new technologies for me, so that’s another reason for doing something very simple

So far I’ve been thinking about the game. I think I have an idea now. Here are some sketches made with MyPaint:

I started to code and I have a functional tile map. I started coding the movement of the main character using the keyboard as input, but then I decided to change it to mouse and will use a simple A* algorithm for path finding.

I’m tired now, it’s 1 am here, I have a full time job and I’ve been working all day. I’ll take a brake for sleeping and will be fresh tomorrow.

That’s all.
