I’m in! (just in time)

I’ve been itching for a good game jam for a while now, so hearing about the latest Ludum Dare was music to my ears!  This will be my third Ludum Dare, with my last game being a 1-dimensional Sumo Wrestling game.

My tools:

Programming: Flash (using FlashPunk) and perhaps HTML/CSS/JS

Art: Illustrator, Photoshop, GraphicsGale

Sound: bfxr, Audacity

I think my biggest challenge for this compo will be trying to wrap it around my busy weekend, but I’ll see what I can do.

I wish the best of luck to everyone, and I can’t wait to see the cool and unique games that come out of this.

I’ve finished Ludum Dare and life is good

For a while it seemed like I wouldn’t be able to get anything finished this weekend, as I was busy all Saturday, but for some reason fate decided to smile upon me and now here I am with a finished game.

You can’t step out of my way so we must fight

YCSOOMWSWMF is a two player game about one dimensional sumo wrestlers who must push the other out of the way.

When I first saw the theme was minimalism, I almost immediately thought about making a one-dimensional game, although at the time I was thinking more along the lines of a dungeon crawler or shooter (which, I would have called “Corridor shooter”), but I realised that these ideas would end up being a lot of effort for not very fun game, which led to this.  I haven’t had a chance to do much play-testing (room mates don’t like being woken up late at night so that they can play against you in a game you made).

Unfortunately, due to obvious time constraints I didn’t get to polish the game much.  Over the next week I will probably improve the graphics (although I will definitely keep their one-dimensional nature), tweak gameplay and add sounds and music.

I’m surprised you’ve kept reading this far, the link’s up there!

Oh that’s right, I’m in

I spent so much time trying to deciding whether or not to join, that I forgot to actually make a “I’m in” post when I finally decided to join.

Anyway, my name is C.D Buckmaster and although this isn’t my first Ludum Dare, it is the first one where I’ve actually finished something.

My game is made in Flash, and uses GraphicsGale for the sprites.  It also uses the FlashPunk framework (thanks to Chevy Ray Johnston and Draknek) and a modified version of Noel Berry’s Advanced Platforming Engine.  If I get sounds in before the deadline, they will most likely be made with BFXR.

The game itself, “You can’t step out of my way so we must fight”, is a two-player, one dimensional, sumo wrestling game, where each player tries to push the other out of the line.

Two proud warriors, if only they didn’t exist on the same vector, they could have been friends.

As soon as I saw the theme, I thought about the prospects of making a game in only 0ne-dimension and quickly it became the only game I could see myself making.

I’ll save the gameplay details for when I submit it so that I don’t repeating myself.

My name is C.D Buckmaster and although I’ve attempted Ludum Dare before, this will (hopefully) be my first time completing it.  This time I will be focussing on trying to reduce the game design and assets to their core, while still creating an experience that will be rewarding to the player.  Keeping this in mind, I also want to use this as a chance to create something experimental and see what kind of story I can create within such constrained time and mechanics.

Programming language of choice: AS3

Framework: FlashPunk

Art tool: GraphicsGale/Illustrator (maybe)

Music: SFXR

I can’t wait to see what the theme will be and what results it produces!

This is going to be my first Ludum Dare, should be fun.

I’ll be creating the game in Actionscript 3 with Flashpunk.

For the assets I’ll be using GraphicsGale and sfxr.
