I had the (WebGL) game functional last night, so today I did animations for sprites, decorations like animated seaweed using a vertex shader, sounds, and some screen-space special effects using a second framebuffer. It was my first Ludum Dare entry and first finished game ever! Great fun weekend. Now I am very bearded, and there is much laundry and dishes waiting…

Looking forward to trying out some games (maybe at work tomorrow if nobody is around…)

End of Day 1

12 hours in…i have a fully working game with intro screen, game functionality all done (except for the special ‘you only get one’ power), sound, “you win” and “game over” screens.
really happy that i kept it as simple as possible – i’ve never actually finished a game before.
it’s a little bit limited in terms of fun gameplay but the original that inspired me (SeaQuest) had shooting submarines as well, and i thought it would be better without that noise!
so i have time to make it look nice tomorrow. i need to add a couple of animation frames and some special effects and stuff.

i watched a few peoples’ live streams today and checked out some stuff – great buzz guys! /A

webgl dolphin rescue

i came very close to making a game where you were a human centipede but when my alarm went off to get up and start 5 hours ago i had forgotten about it. i’m going for a webgl game inspired by “Seaquest” from Atari 2600. you are a dolphin and rescue survivors from a sinking ship before sharks eat them. you will have a sonic screetch that kills all the sharks on screen, but you only have one of them per game. i’m 5 hours in and i have some webgl background stuff and dolphin controls with an air meter (you have to go up to the surface and breathe).

i’m just using really basic javascript and webgl and writing the maths by hand – not very complicated stuff.

im uploading new versions of game to to http://antongerdelan.net/dolphin_rescue/

going to go for webgl

i’ve been using webgl at work for about a year so i it will be cool to try a little game.

i’m just going to use base webgl from javascript and something simple in 2d. i think i’ll only have 1 day so i’ll have to be quick.

i wrote a sprite-map font-renderer in javascript that might maybe be handy http://antongerdelan.net/blog/font_rendering/

and a bunch of regular opengl tutorials, so i’ll probably cut out snippets of shader code from there http://antongerdelan.net/opengl/

other tools; nano, gimp (i have a wacom), audacity for some minimal sound effects. there won’t be any music
