About Cake&Code (twitter: @cakencode)

We're a design and development duo from Berkeley, CA.

Zeik is a front-end engineer in the bay area. He can program in a few different languages and loves to give new ones a try. He's a big indie game enthusiast and likes fiddling with anything that can be tweaked and changed. (And honestly even things that can't.)

Cake is a multi-discipline designer (visual, ui, graphic, web, etc). She's a bit of a design nazi and likes to obsess over white space, typography, and colors. Check out her portfolio at http://www.microcake.org

Wayyy overdue, but we’ve both been super busy over the holidays and with work, so we haven’t been able to make any updates since then. But before the clock ticks down and LD is over, come on over and rate our game, “Darkest Friday“! :) It’s a snarky typing game Zeik and I made for this LD. I also have a timelapse you guys might enjoy? πŸ˜›

Check out our game here!

We’re done!!! “Darkest Friday” is ready to play. :D

Phew! We’re finally done with our game “Darkest Friday” in record time! Even though half of us were out of commission for half of the weekend (hence a slight holding back on the art side for our game), we finished our game early and with low amounts of stress to get things done. We hope you enjoy! And now….LET’S GO RATE GAMES! \o/

Play Our Game, Darkest Friday!

We’re wrapping up some finer points of our game right now before jumping into music and sfx, and I thought we would post a helpful screenshot of the game instructions for you guys to check out. It’ll give you a closer look at how the game is working and looking so far. :)

Hope all of the jam folks are doing well and all the compo folks are having a good time playing/rating games!

Hey all! It’s Cake the Artist reporting in on the progress of our game “Darkest Friday”. πŸ˜€ Hoping it’ll set the mood for the game successfully. There’s still a lot to do on our part, but it seems like a bunch of compo games are rolling in. Good luck guys!

Zeik here again. Implemented more of cake’s new art, now we’ve got some perspective. Enemies have eyes and arms, there are indicators for how many toys/gifts are left to go, and there’s more animation. See you all late, time to get back to work :)

Gameplay WIP

Zeik here! We’re well underway with our Darkest Friday game and the gameplay is coming together. We’ve got typing, we’ve got partial text recognition and enemy highlighting, we’ve got win/lose conditions, and it is actually a difficult game already. Going to keep chugging along on the programming front, adding real enemy assets and text boxes as well as more UI that is severely lacking at this point (it’s all console output, yay!).

Here’s a screenshot with an ugly mix of programmer art and early art assets. If you look at cake’s updates or go on the livestream you’ll see the current (much more beautiful) state of the art.

Our first screenshot post! πŸ˜€ Our game is coming out nicely, although it will be a little sparse on the visuals side. We’re making a typing game with a snarky Black Friday twist to it (hence the title “Darkest Friday”. You have to distribute toys one at a time to a raging hoard of customers who are demanding all of the coolest and trendiest things.

On the actual programming side, we have typing functionality, customers appearing, some assets loaded in for testing, and kill conditions for customers. Still have a long ways to go….

Are we in? Heck yeah we’re in! We couldn’t quite make it in time during LD#27, so now we’re back with a vengeance.

The year is quickly coming to an end, you’ve been wondering what gifts to buy friends and family, and decorating the house for the festivities has probably begun by now. Yep, it’s none other than Ludum Dare.

Tools: Adobe Illustrator, Sketchbook, Chronolapse, MY BRAIN

Tools: Sublime Text, Wolfram Tones, and either the Flash SDK or HTML5

Good luck to everyone!

Good luck to all entrants and happy game-making!

My Apologies

Zeik here, and I need to apologize to everyone profusely. I’m sorry to all of you but most of all to Cake, she finished all of the assets, she literally did all the art, all the music, sound effects, and some promotional material. I lied to all of you and lied to myself that I could finish the game in the few hours I could scrounge from the busy weekend. I fought it until the last minutes, but it was just too much.

We’d always managed to scrape by in the past but I bit off more than I could chew this time. I promised this feature and that feature, but in the end I just couldn’t finish them all. The code is 95% there, but all the little bits that make a game special: plugging in the music, the sound effects, the fades and extra flourishes… all that is missing. It’s just not done.

Don’t count us out though, we’ll be back. We’ll be back with a vengeance.

Ahhh, so close to deadline!

We’re frantically working away. >_< Horrible horrible time management skills this time, but at the least we’ll have a minimum viable game product πŸ˜› We’re so excited to play everyone’s games though! I’ve been keeping tabs on the front page and previews and they’re all looking spectacular! You all should be proud!

In the mean time, while we’re slaving away, here are some screenshots! (That leaderboard is totally a MAYBE until we figure out the rest of our junk out :P) Also ignore that filler text. We haven’t written copy yet. XD *facepalms*

More UI!

We’re sort of falling behind a bit but hopefully we can catch up today! I got a lot of art and UI assets done even though they’re still being tweaked. I also have to start figuring out how to animate these suckers. I don’t ever animate anything so it’s going to get tricky for me. Lets hope for the best! Good luck to everyone too!

“Stargazers” Artist’s Timelapse

Posted by (twitter: @cakencode)
Friday, May 3rd, 2013 12:26 pm

While Zeik is fiddling with his own timelapse for the code he made for our game “Stargazers”, I was able to throw together mine fairly quickly and have it ready to go! (He’s much more of a perfectionist when it comes to his video. :) )

Check out our game here:

“Stargazers” required a lot less intensive art than usual, I think. The constellations were pretty easy to throw together since there were only 10 of them in varying detail, plus even the most detailed ones were extremely geometric and just required small amounts of shape wrangling.

Shamefully, typography took a large chunk of this video. u.u Moreso than I’d like to honestly reveal, since I probably edited that down to a much more inaccurate representation of how much time I spent.

Maybe next time I’ll sacrifice overly customized typography for more detailed worlds. :) Hope you all enjoy my timelapse~ <3

Also, we apologize for being much slower at rating games than usual this time around! Cake and Zeik are drowning in a sea of school projects and end of semester/quarter assignments. We’re hoping to make a “Best Of” post after going on a rating spree though! (Which should hopefully be after this weekend!)
