An orc is about to cry.

I think my game didn’t submitted. I’ve been working all week, and i just realized: my game is not in LD #32 directory.

I don’t know why this happened, and i’m really sad; the game is untouched since the submittion time, so i haven’t done anything with it. I hope LudumDare guys let me submit it, or something. If not, well, i’ll just be sad somewhere else.

You can play de jam version here

DONE! At least a MVP. It was an experience quite intense and weird. I learn more in three days than in two years of uni. So, here you go; An Orc Walks Into A Bar in its 0.1.0 version, made by a guy who didn’t knew how to do it.

Thanks if someone read this, and i hope i can

Move with arrows, Z to grab, X to throw or hit, beat them 10 and win, be hit 10 times and lose.

I wanted to make a Twine as an introduction

I loved this #LDJAM. Thanks for all folks.

An orc always have enemies.

“Yarr mother is a horrendous wild pig, with it’s own gravitational center”

Well, i slept. Knowing i had one more day relaxed me too much. I just made the running and idle sprites prettier, with shadows and a more not radioactive color.

I came to work, (in a little design studio) and my workmates told me to finish the game. So today i’m going to use the hours i have left to test a little more the game, and to do a surprise.

The intro of the game will be also… unconventional.

I hope you like it when i finish.

And orc is a little stupid.

… and does not read the rules properly. You know, barbarians doesn’t know how to read.

I rushed over my game, tried to make it a MVP, was actually desperate looking for help to solve all the issues i couldn’t. And…

Well, i realized i had one more day to go. I’m getting a lot of help, even if the game is 97% mine, the music (the main song is AWESOME.) is made by Cob Cris, a guy i consider a genius -look for Cosmic Song in Gamejolt-

SO, i made the “last minute rush”, and now i have one more day. If my heart can resist one more, i’ll be submitting a better game tomorrow. So far, here is a screenshot of my awkwardly painted sprite.

An orc is the real MVP

“Is there no bantender in this filthy hole?”

I’m going to try to achieve the MVP of “An Orc Walks Into A Bar”:

*Eturk roams, takes things and hit them or throw them.

*One enemy chases Eturk with a minimum AI (patrols, and when Eturk is close, attacks with his fists) and respawns.

*Melee object break if they are used too much. And both melee and range respawn outside the window so you can keep throwing.

*Objects: Melee – Broom and chair (i wanted to add a little elf, but time is tyrant). Range – Ale Chopp (is it called like that?), Barrel

*HP for both of them, and a little time lapse of inmmunity.

*TRY to do some sprites animated. Thing is i don’t know if i’ll get the time. We’ll see.

Art might be as far as i get (i can do windows and a fancier room. But this is how jams work)

An orc swings a broom

“Get out of my bar, filthy pirate”

So far, i had problems with doing the sprites. I think is too much for one person with low knowledge of programming and animation; Maybe the full idea i had won’t be complete for tomorrow, but i’m liking the game so far. So i might give some fixes after the jam is ended.

I could make a really nasty event where if you press a key, the broom sets its angle to a fixed number (couldn’t figure how could i do that with variables). And the ale now rotates when you throw it, but i can’t make it stop; i had to make a control sprite for it (i was using the drawing as control) so the rotation could happen without the mug going down.

I made some art, and a sprite in Spriter, but i having a really hard time going from the PC to the MAC, both with issues of some kind.

And i’ve been alone for a LOT of time, not talking to anyone. Maybe doesn’t sound surprising, but when you know me, the first thing you realize is that i talk ALL THE TIME.

I enter Ludum Dare as a child, and i’ll leave it as a mediocre game developer.

An orc walks into a much more decent bar.

“Ale with a little umbrella” – A fancier place to brawl.

Okay! I worked all day, and couldn’t achieve too much programming; i had some help from people of the DUVAL community (united gamedevs from latin america) and i could progress in some things, but i still feel stuck: as if my knowledge only can take me this far. And now i’m completely desoriented. That’s why i started doing art.

It took longer than i expected, but i’m proud of the assets i made. Still no sprite of Etruk or any bar fighter: just this pink cone. I’ll be honest, i kinda like it, we’ve been through some things together.

Placeholders have feelings too.

An orc must sleep

I’ll call it a day: sun’s up, and i’m just getting asleep over my ale. Nobody said that orc’s life was easy.

Eturk’s out. But first: i’ve been working on some art for the main character. Eturk would look something like this (i made a lot of shadows to it, it will be impossible to animate.

Captura de pantalla 2015-04-18 a las 7.32.15 copia

Tomorrow i’ll get on with the background and the rest of the programming.

I hope i have enough time to use dogs as weapons.

“My ancestors kept their floors clean as a sign of power”

Okay, Construct 2 is by my side in this quest: i managed to grab the mug and throw it in an unrealistic straight line. (i tried physics, but desisted almost immediately for obvious reasons). And it kills the pirate! or make him vanish, w/e. Thing is, i managed to use a instance variable, and apply all the “set angle” correctly so the orc gets to throw the mug in the way he is looking (it took me SO LONG). So i’ll call it a day for distance weapons.

Now with melee, i’ll try to make the broom act as a sword; rotate enough to look as a hit, and collide to make damage. So long, i’m not really sure of most of the things i’m doing, but is kinda looking good.

I might sit and do some placeholders, so i can send a little more elaborated screenshots.

Oh! and a friend of our gamedev community, Agustin Pre, made an scenario in Blender, so i can use it as a foundation for a better drawing. So, the bar looks awesome in 3d, i guess it will be the same in 2d.

Is 6am in here! and i’m still awake.

An orc is friendly when it comes to drink…

Okay, let’s have a beer; listen to me, bartender.

ETURK can’t grab the mug. I mean, i had the idea he could throw it to someone, i even thought about adding phisics, but i can’t even make him get the mug. I applied a “if overlapping and pressing space bar” but i can’t make the mug be in the place where his hand is going to be, instead of the center of his chest. As if his heart would be like a powerful magnet or something.

Construct 2 is quite good so far, i could resolve things as collisions and the little pirate holding still when he collides. I made a stupid variable that was “If colliding, set -Collision- to “Col””, and with just “if colliding” was enough.

I’m not a smart man.

So far, being chased by a mouse-drew pirate  is fun.

I watched a Youtube tutorial about doing beat-em ups, and at the end, he never talked about how to set the enemies, the damage or anything else. I guess i’m on my own on this.

BTW, you can watch me working (i’m from argentina!) here: www.twitch.tv/BruReale
Or talk and interact in www.twitter.com/BruReale

Is 3 am here. Will be a long night (specially with the upstairs neighbors having a party, tap-dancing i assume)

First thought about doing a game alone: you have no one to discuss with. Can be bad or good; but i got an idea, i pictured, and i’m already working on it.

I had to move to my 5 yo computer with windows: Mac and iOS makes things hard.

So far, the game is simple:

Beat em up. You are an orc in a roleplay game, like D&D: you get insulted by a drunk guy, you left your weapons at the castle. So, you berserk and start fighting with everything at range: brooms, chairs, mugs, even some people and dogs.

I hope i can at least make it look like one: no programming and not being an artist will have some costs in time, but hey: i’ll learn a lot, i guess.
