I used Game Maker for almost everything. I also used Photoshop to make one background and Audacity to record a sound effect.

I made a lot of progress since I last went to sleep!

During the car ride back up to school I coded up a lot of basic display stuff and started making one of the sprites.

At this point, the game has basic functionality, though parts of it are placeholder art and the mechanics are not complete.

That being said, the framework for almost everything is in place, so it should be fairly easy to move forward from here.

You can click on germs to kill them (right now they all have 4 hp, so it takes 4 frame to kill them (30 fps for the game)).

There is limited but regenerating fuel for the laser beam(s). The last germ left creates 4 offspring in the center and dies.

The only attribute that changes from a germ to it’s offspring is direction of movement, but many more changing things will be implemented tomorrow.

Ideas, sleep

I came up with an idea I like:

With the theme of evolution, I thought to move against that, so a game about preventing evolution. What this means: click bacteria to death before they escape the petri dish and doom everyone. If you survive until the vaccine/anti-biotics/wonder drug/etc is produced, you win! The bacteria that avoid death longer have more time to reproduce, so they will overall become harder to defeat as the game goes on. Traits that could change: number of clicks to kill, speed, movement pattern(this is a big one), reproduction speed, etc. I’m thinking the game should be about 5 minutes in length.

Progress so far: mockups of possible screen layout (drawn on paper), ideas for mechanics and interaction.

Plan for tonight: finish packing for college and go to sleep! Not much time for work right now.

Plan for tomorrow: start making objects and structuring during car ride, do more work later at night.

I might not have a lot of time to work on this, but I think I’ll try to keep the scope small, and I could always continue to work on it after the competition, so whatever.

First Ludum Dare, I’ll have to only sort of participate due to packing/traveling.

Not sure what I’ll use, maybe Game Maker?
