Day 2 update! (72h Jam)

Hey. Today was a tough day. However I think I pulled through alright.

I woke up had breakfast and coffee and got down to work on an inventory system. I made a pretty simple system but doing programming in college this year has really payed off. At this point I only had some placeholder objects.

After this I started work on adding in some enemies (wolves) and a combat system. I had to rework my player sprites slightly to show a sword. eventually I had wolves running around a bit and you could kill them, but they couldn’t hurt you. So I worked on some UI for the player. Then it was about 3 or 4 pm and I was feeling really tired. I did small bits of work for an hour or 2 and then had dinner. After dinner I felt super unmotivated and I began to really worry about my progress on the game, on top of this I had some big (good) news which I ended up spending about an hour and a half sorting out. Eventually I worked on some actual inventory items, and added them in. The descriptions give an idea of the lore of the world as you can see in the screenshot below.

Then I began to worry even more. I want to have a trading system in the game, and to program it seemed like a herculean task. I was super exhausted, and began to consider how I could scale down. Eventually I decided to go to bed where I stayed for less than 30 minutes before the coffee I had after dinner finally hit. Suddenly I needed to get up and program the wolves to attack, and to drop items on death that will replenish your health. Eventually I ended up with the systems in the gif below.ld36e

The wolf will attack you if you are in a range of it and if you don’t kill it it will run away for a moment at such a speed that if you run the opposite direction you just about escape, but if you don’t it will come attack you again. When you kill it it can drop either a coin or a heart.

Then I drew this little house. Overall I’m surprisingly happy with my progress, after a bit of an emotional rollercoaster earlier. Now to go sleep! Well done to everyone in the compo, and good luck to all in the jam!

So I decided to add in some more art. The style I’ve gone with is slow work but I really love how it looks. I’m going to go get some dinner now but you can enjoy this gif while I’m gone.

5 hours work. Going pretty slow.

I only got 3 and a half hours sleep! Help.

Despite this I got down to work this morning and began by setting up my player. First I programmed movement and then I got down to character design and animation. Check out the gif below.

After that I decided to do some more work on the gameplay, and added a talking system. I’m entering the jam so I salvaged some code from a recent project and convinced it to work with this game. Here’s a gif of some test dialogue.

Overall I’m proud of what I’ve got so far but kind of wish I had more. Anyway I’m off to get some more art assets ready.

No sleep for the daring.

Hey so it is 5 am. I’ve been awake since 2am because I got too hyped.

However I have spent time refining my idea, planning my approach and doodling some ideas. I think I have a solid idea of what I can get done.  If all goes really well I’ll even have a procedural island, but if not I’ll design an island instead. Here’s some pictures of my doodles.

Hope you like it, if you want other colors I’ll be glad to oblige just ask.

Woah it feels like so long since my last one. So this ludum dare marks 3 years making games and 8 LD jams (I missed 2 ;-;). My computer was broken and I had college work during the last one so I’m super hyped to get jamming.

But what tools are you using?!

Engine: Unity(unless I suddenly go insane)

Art:  2D:Photoshop 3D:Blender

Audio: SFXR, My trusty keyboard, audacity, LSDJ? Famitracker?

I have a load of fresh ideas. My last Ludum dare went exceedingly well. I made a game called “A Years Growth“, Which came 85th overall in the jam, and 17th in mood. I’m hoping to make a better game again, and to be honest the lack of rating will be a nice change.

Anyway here’s a pic of my set up. I spent today tidying up and getting this in order. Lets hope for a good theme.

I’m hesitant to say it but…

I’m in?????

burgertrainSo I’m definitely going for the jam. I will be using a raycasting engine I have been working on for A college project with some friends (pictured above). So I’ll be pretty constrained and will have to devote a lot of time to adding features to the actual engine, but more than likely I’ll have something to show on Monday…

So that’s the engine covered. On graphics I’ll be going with gimp, and for audio I’ll use sfxr, lsdj, famitracker, and audacity probably.

This is going to be one of my most challenging ludum dares yet but it will be a lot of fun for sure.

A Years Growth – More like a years work in 74 hours!

So I think I’m just gonna dump all of my progress gifs/screens here with very little writing. Still a lot for me to do tomorrow but I’m having so much fun.

So after lunch I made my game fade between scenes and had the door advance time.

Then I made it so you could chop down trees.

And for about 3 hours or so I have been making the farming system.

All that’s left gameplay-wise is watering and harvesting. Then I’ll work on the story.

Anyway I’m going to bed. Good luck during submission hour and don’t stress too much.

Day 2 update.

Hey so things are a bit slow today but I’m hoping to get all the gameplay at least mocked up.

So far I have made different seasons in the level, redesigned the character slightly and added an animation for walking up.

I hope you enjoy my gifs.

End of Day one with 14-16 hours work done.

Whew I had a good first day today. That is a first for me as I always mess up on the first day usually. Gameplay wise there’s not much in my game yet, however I have made huge progress with my world and visuals. Still so much work to be done, so I’m definitely doing the jam not the compo. I really love my idea for the game. I guess gameplay wise it’s somewhat like harvest moon, simplified into four tasks, but the story is really what I’m happy with. I mean the fact that I have a story. I’m hoping it’s a nice relaxing experience in the end anyway.

I know you’re probably only here for the pics/gifs so here you go.lD34SS5

Progress??? Progress!!!!

So here’s a few screens from the first 7 or so hours of my entry.

I first did up the graphics for the environment. This was I realised tougher than I thought, as I’m having changing seasons in my game and I have to do 4 of most textures.

Then I made a quick player movement script ( Attached to the capsule below) and mocked up the winter version of the main area.

After some lunch I drew up the main character and replaced the capsule.

Then I made what I’m almost certain is one of my best walk cycles ever. Admittedly it could do with 2 more frames but there’s not really enough time.

Hope everyone is having fun! Now I’m going to go record some music :)

I’m in it to do moderately well and be happy with myself.

So After my first college semester I feel a lot more confident in my programming. That’s not to say that unity wont be finicky but at least I can program faster and with more confidence. You never know. On this my 7th LD I might actually make the compo! Stranger things have happened. Anyway quick breakdown of tools etc.

Engine – Unity 3D

Language – C#

Art – Photoshop and Blender

Music – LSDJ, Famitracker, and my keyboard

SFX – Take a guess! it’s SFXR!!!

Anyway good luck to all and may the best theme win (isolation obviously).

I have made a monster.
