Poo Dee Pie: Dee most horrible game in dee universe.

http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-31/?action=preview&uid=39189

Do you have what it takes to survive a horrible and monotonous grind in dee Poo Dee Pie factory, long enough to beat the developer’s (my) high score of 133 pies?

WARNING: This is a factory game, factory work is repetitive. VERY REPETITIVE, HORRIBLE AND SHIT. Dee inspiration for this horrible game came from ~12 years of factory experience by me. Poo Dee Pie: Dee most horrible game in dee universe is an amazingly accurate glimpse into dee daily life of your average factory worker.

Cheers, from Ben and Steffen.

Poo Dee Pie: Dee most horrible game in dee universe.

Hello! How are you? Caught up on your sleep yet? Me neither…

So yeah, ummm it seems to be coming up fairly regularly in dee comments for Poo Dee Pie that dee artwork is amazing but dee gameplay is just too damn repetitive.

First of all, YES dee artwork by Steffen Wittig is incredible! He took my absolute turd of an idea for a game and with his universally acclaimed skills he polished it up really nicely. If you haven’t already done so, be sure to follow him on Twitter @SteffenWittig for a lot more examples from this very talented creature.

Secondly and dee main reason for this post, “the gameplay in Poo Dee Pie is very repetitive!” YES dee gameplay (by me) is very repetitive, that’s entirely dee point. Congratulations, you figured it out! This is a factory, factory work is repetitive. VERY REPETITIVE, HORRIBLE AND SHIT. Perhaps now it’s beginning to make sense? Dee inspiration for this horrible game came from ~12 years of factory experience by me, before I went to university as a mature age student. Yes, Im horribly old.

So in conclusion, Poo Dee Pie: Dee most horrible game in dee universe is an amazingly accurate glimpse into dee daily life of your average factory worker.

Cheers, from Ben.

That Ludum Dare Lure…

I was going to avoid Ludum Dare 31 altogether, but then the hype of it kicked in a bit and I thought I’d see if I could get into a team as a Designer / Blogger only (i.e. I’d come up with a game and do the promo stuff for it while other team members developed the actual game). Nothing came of that but then I got to Tweeting back and forth with @SteffenWittig who I’ve been dev mates with for a while and I got an immediate game idea after the following theme showed up in the theme voting list:

theme I guess the vast majority of people saw this as a “Snowman” but my warped brain immediately went in a completely other direction.

I bounced the idea off Steffen and he loved it and after a series of back and forth tweets, we decided to team up to potentially do a game. There’s about 6 themes in the last round of voting that the game could match in with really well, so hopefully one of those is what eventually gets chosen and if so we’ll be taking this weekend off from our other game development stuff to do LD31.

Steffen will be doing all of the art, UI, soundtrack and sound effects and I’ll be doing the design and development. I was a bit reluctant to lose a weekend of my own development time for Blue Thumbs Gaming but the chance to work with such an awesome artist like Wittig, was an opportunity I couldn’t look past. He’s also a developer in his own right and has published two really awesome games “Depri-Horst” and “Explodey BAM!”. He’s also the mastermind / artist behind a very cool comic series, this is one of his most recent works which is highly appropriate:

Wittig

So we’ll be in with the chaos over the weekend trying to get my crazy game idea built and all of SW’s awesome art and sounds patched in, in time to be entered in the 72hr Jam competition for LD31.

If you want to follow along with the development of our game, we’ll be Tweeting about it under the hastag #PooDeePie That’s assuming we get lucky with an appropriate chosen theme of course.

Good luck everyone!

Really looking forward to playing another huge batch of awesome games.

Cheers,

Ben.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone that has played my game WARP of the WORLDS and taken some time to rate it and give me some feedback in the comments.

HS

The new global high score is 3738, if you manage to beat that please Tweet a screenshot from the main menu to me: @ThumbsBlue (Note: to get back to the main menu from the Game Over screen press “L”).

If you haven’t played it yet, but would like to try your hand at beating the High Score you get easily download a Windows .exe version here from the link here: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-30/?action=preview&uid=39189

Also if anyone is interested in playing this game after I update it (a non LD30 dropbox version that I’ll email you the link to) with various features I forgot to put in and extended game play, please send an email to bluethumbsgaming@gmail.com.

Cheers, Ben.

WARP WORLDS: Lessons learned for next time.

It’s funny and a bit face palming to look through my concept notes for my game WARP WORLDS. For example I totally forgot that I was going to make the World 1 pink enemy jump! That would have been so easy to do and would have made World 1 a LOT better!

123

I guess that’s the downside of me getting such a solid and complete idea for my game so fast that I was really happy with, as it meant that I barely looked back at my notes which is largely why I missed such an obvious and major feature as the World 1 enemy jump (also a lack of sleep hahaha). Another reason is that I only had about 12hrs out of the 48hrs to work out the concept and build the game do to work and family commitments (and little to no sleep).

I’ll be kicking myself for quite a while for forgetting that feature but I’ll add it in to the game post LD30.

I spent a bit of time tonight checking out and rating some of the great games submitted and had a lot of fun playing most of them. After that I played my game for a while and ended up smashing my High Score. :)

hs

If you think you can beat it, it’s very quick and easy to grab a Windows .exe version of the game from:

http://blue-thumbs-gaming.itch.io/warp-of-the-worlds-fight-and-flight

If you do get the chance to play it, please take a moment to rate it and/or leave a comment. I’m especially keen to get some feedback from anybody who plays the game with their kids aged 4-8, which is the target audience I’ve gone for with this game.

Cheers,

Ben.

WARP  WORLDS

Fight and Flight

SS1

This is my entry for the Ludum Dare 30 – 48hr Compo, the theme of which was “Connected Worlds”. This game was made in the 12 hrs free time I had during the 48hrs of the competition. It’s a very simple 1 button game for kids aged 4-8, that switches between 2 connected worlds:

SS2

Green World = Fight. Collect the stars to increase your score and press the Space Bar to shoot the enemies but try not to shoot too many stars!

SS3

Pink World = Flight. Avoid the rocks and jump out of the way of the enemy bullets!

Here’s a quick gameplay video:

You can download it here: http://blue-thumbs-gaming.itch.io/warp-of-the-worlds-fight-and-flight

I hope you and/or your children have as much fun playing this game as I had making it.

Cheers, Ben.
