BarkerGames Entry Day 1

Posted by (twitter: @@JustinLeeBarker)

So far this is what we have:

A machine with blades following you, so you have to keep your distance.

You can jump and have some air control from some different engines spraying fire. (go particles!)

So far it’s really fun. A little hard though. But we have about 2 more days still, so we will have time to make the levels better.

We are in! For a second time as a team of 4.

BarkerGames is in again, like last time it will be:

  • Justin Barker (Art, Programming)
  • Nathan Barker (Programming)
  • Ryan Barker (Music, Playtesting)
  • Jeremy Gohier (Programming)

Sadly this time a few of us can’t participate on the last day, but we should be able to create something cool anyways.

Tools:

  • Unity 2D
  • Visual Studio
  • Anvil Studio (music)
  • Inkscape (art)
  • Not sure on sound effects yet.

PS. As a possible bonus, our brother Ricky Barker has expressed his interest with helping as well, so he may join in too.

Good luck everyone!

We are in, with the biggest team yet!

Both me and my brother Nathan are in again. We had so much fun working on our last game Empyreal Roving we are going to do it again.

Me and Nathan have teamed up on a couple projects before:

Empyreal Roving:

FirstScreenShot1-300x175

Battle for Ethonia:

Each time learning more and getting better at making a fun game.

Our tools will be:

  • Unity
  • Visual Studio
  • Inkscape
  • Audacity

Empyreal Roving Post Mortem:

I am horrible at remembering to do post mortems so here it is:

We had a lot of fun making and playing Empyreal Roving. Lots of other people had fun playing it as well, only problem was it was a bit too difficult for most people. Maybe we can tone down our next game and enable a “Insane Mode” for anyone who find it too easy.

Another thing that I feel like we could have left out is all the text up front explaining how the ship was broken, why you were there, etc. It was a bit much, “just get to the game play”, is what we will try to work on more next time. If we do have story it should be introduced as you play, instead of it all up front.

All in all we both feel like we did great, and plan on improving our skills even more next time.

Good luck to everyone.

First Day down!

I’m In!

I will be working solo this time around. In the recent past I have come to love a little program called Inkscape, as a kid I used to love drawing up my own Mario, Donkey Kong, etc levels, characters and such. Inkscape has helped me realize, again, that I do enjoy drawing, not just programming(which I do at my day job, and love). So my focus this time around is to create something that looks really nice. I will work on programming the first 4-6 hours or so, then focus on art, and Juice the remaining time.

Tools:

Unity(2d)

Visual Studio for coding

Inkscape for art

Sfxr or my mouth for sound

Darkwave studio for music (assuming I get around to it this time, and remember how to use it)

Good luck everyone and happy gaming!

Quick Update

Didn’t get much time today since it was my Daughters 10th birthday.

I did get to update the graphics a bit:

Screenshot 2015-04-18 21.57.50

Started adding a menu level select screen etc(They need a lot of work still)

Play current version here: Web

I also still need to add sound, and some GUI components.

Getting tired, will finish up tomorrow.

Good night.

Game Play Mostly Done, Yay

When the theme was announced I wasn’t too happy with it. It took me over an hour in the IRC chat, searching online, Twitter, etc trying to figure out a game idea. Somewhere I saw someone say “Use Nature as a weapon” and I was instantly super excited. I had a good game idea: The thought of using growing plants to tip over buildings and smash those that would desire to harm the forest/nature, is such a neat idea. So after about 4 hours here is my progress:

Screen1

The Idea is to click to plant a seed, then watch as it grows and destroys buildings. The goal is to smash all the humans by making the buildings they built topple onto them.

My current version you can try out here:

WebGL

If you have any comments/suggestions please post them here.

I’m In, this time solo

I will be participating solo this time. My goal will be to make a simple game, no more huge ambitions that don’t get completed. This time I am going to settle for simple, and try to polish as much as possible.

Edit: Another thing I lack is writing a post-mortem I usually get busy and just forget, I WILL write a post-mortem this time!

Tools:

  • Unity 5
  • C# Visual Studio 2013
  • Inkscape
  • Darkwave Studio
  • Audacity

Good luck everyone!

In for the Jam!

I’m In – with some new tools

I would like to say: “I’m In”

I have used primarily XNA for Ludum Dare,  since it’s no longer supported I decided to look into Unity 2D. I have messed around with it a bit since the last Dare I participated in, LD28 I think? Anyways, I see the power in Unity and want to learn more, I just haven’t had much motivation to make an entire game from start to finish. That’s why I decided to use Unity 2D for this Ludum Dare.

My tools will be:

Tools: Unity with Visual Studio 2013

Art: Either Gimp or Inkscape depends on how I feel this weekend

Sound/Music: Audacity, SFXR, and since I suck at writing music I will probably find some music generator for that.

My goal is to finish my game within the first 24 hours, then spend the rest of the time making it look nice, sound nice, and bug free.(Since I have been horrible at this in my previous entries) I’m hoping Unity will save some time so this will be easier.

Good Luck Everyone!

At first I wasn’t sure I wanted to join this time around, but when I saw the theme I had an awesome idea. Sadly I couldn’t put the entirety of the game idea in; due to time constraints, family things, etc.

But I like the idea enough I will do a post compo version with all the awesome features I dreamed it should have.

Play it here:

Twas fun,

Happy Gaming :)

Barker Games is in for the Jam!

Last time it was just me and Jeremy, this time my brother decided to join us and write some music. All the games I have worked on for Ludum Dare severely lacked music, so this will help the game mood.

Last Ludum Dare, Theme: Minimalism we made Downgrade, which went really well with the exception of Polish and PlayTesting, we hope to correct that this time around.

Who we are:

Justin Barker(me): Programmer

Ryan Barker: Music

Jeremy Gohier: Art

Tools:

XNA 4.0, Visual Studio 2010, Gimp, Audacity, Anvil Studio

PS. Last October we released The Return of CyberBox for XBLIG. Go try it out and let us know if you liked it. Any input would be great!

I’m excited to play all the games you all are coming up with!

Happy Ludum Dare 27 everyone!

And Good Luck to all!

Lets Jam!

Barker Games is in for the jam!

Last Ludum Dare I(Justin Lee Barker) made The Accursed Moon. This time Jeremy Gohier will be joining me. I will work on the programming and he will work on everything else.

The problem I had last Ludum Dare was that I worked between 13-14 hours on Saturday which burned me out. All I did Sunday is fix a few bugs and publish it. My motivation was depleted :(

I plan on working normal work hours(8 hours a day). With Monday being the only possible exception. Hopefully that way I wont loose motivation and will feel more confident about our entry.

Our tools:

Language: C#, XNA

Art: Gimp, possibly InkScape

Sound: sfxr

Music: Undecided

Good luck to everyone!

Happy Ludum Dare 26
