Shifting focus from the compo to the jam

There was too much stuff going on this weekend and I also got off to a very sluggish start, so my game isn’t in great shape right now. Definitely won’t be ready for the 48hr deadline, but I’ll see what I can get done in time for the jam.

It’s some sort of gladiator vs slime thing, with the Connected Worlds elements only barely implemented at this point. No title, no title screen, no sound (as usual). But it does have little birds circling in the sky! Lots of time has been spent on the camera, which is still a bit glitchy.

I’m also using Unity’s standard ThirdPersonController script. It’s shocking just how terrible it is. I can’t believe it’s provided as an ‘official’ asset. The code is a mess in so many ways — I was sorely tempted to start cleaning it up but the clock was ticking.

It’s 1am here and while I had considered doing an all-nighter… Sleep is just too good to pass up.

I scrapped my idea of doing “Shabby Buffet Online” because it meant most of the weekend would be spent re-doing work I did in a previous Ludum Dare. Not much fun in that. Instead, I went back to my original idea and it’s coming along nicely. No title yet, but the basics are in.

Shabby Buffet…Online?

This is probably a terrible, terrible idea, but I’m going to recreate my LD28 entry (Shabby Buffet) as the new and improved Shabby Buffet Online. I’m going to do it from scratch (using Unity’s standard FPS controller again, I think). Won’t be borrowing any LD28 code or re-using any of the models or textures. Same gameplay, same goal, but hopefully this time it won’t be broken. And of course it will be changed to fit the Connected Worlds theme.

Time is already running out. Go go go!

This will be my third Ludum Dare, although like last time I only have about half the allotted time due to Real Life commitments.

It’s going to be a busy, busy weekend over here…but I think I should still be able to cobble together another 48hr entry. This will be my second Ludum Dare.

  • Audio: The sound of a grown man weeping quietly as a physics bug brings ruin to yet another game jam entry.

My entry in the previous Ludum Dare was Shabby Buffet, a mangled mess of a game that was noticed by a few awesome Youtubers. I was shocked to see it being played by the Yogscast recently, to the tune of ~600,000 views. o.O

I’ve been wrestling with some physics / collider / particle issues and may not be able to finish the game. I threw in a quick buffet table with a few food dispensers and was able to catch some of the food on the plate, but as soon as the plate moves, the particles just slide right off. I need some friction on the plate…hmmm.

There’s still time to get some sleep and try a few more things in the morning. If it weren’t for this plate issue, the only outstanding ‘features’ would be annoying NPCs wandering around, some more types of food, and a quick score once you get back to your table. Ah well.

Worst buffet ever

The clock continues to count down and I still haven’t added the buffet to my game-about-a-buffet. This is probably a bad sign.

What I do have is a title screen, the overall structure, a bit of visual polish, and a suitably ugly carpet. Too much time was wasted trying to get white plates to show up on white tablecloths, so I’ve reluctantly made the tables blue. Need…more…time!

Phew. I decided on my game pretty quickly but then lost a few hours to family commitments and general mucking about. It’s time for some sleep.

My progress has been slow-ish. I’m used to coding turn-based strategy games, so this first-person physics thing has been an interesting challenge. Modelled the table and chairs to warm up, then wasted some time kicking them around and making the tables spawn via code for some reason. Tomorrow I need to get to the actual buffet part of the game — piling food on top of a plate and getting jostled by the other buffeteers. The game is basically 3 simple parts: Grab a plate at the buffet, load it up, and get back to your chair without spilling everything.

Haven’t had any time to look at anyone else’s games yet! :O

Did some quick brainstorming after the theme was announced and I think I’m going to go with a buffet sim. See how much food you can pile onto your (one) plate, then get back to your table with enough of it still on there to get your money’s worth.

Doable? I have no idea. Better get started on a list of required assets!

I keep meaning to take part in one of these but it’s so hard to get a weekend free of commitments. Except this time! So I’m going to jump in for the first time and see what happens.
