Badass Barbecue Zombie Brawl

Ever wanted to explode zombies by throwing gunpowder-spiced potato salad at them? You can now (soon that is). Most mechanics are implemented, level design and some assets have yet to be done, hopefully until the Compo ends (if not, Jam it is!).

I’m In

Hey, I’m in once more. Not exactly optimistic because I’ve never ever finished an LD48 I joined before, but I might as well just give it another try.

  • Language + IDE: PureBasic 5.31 or Java w/ Eclipse
  • Libs: dunno yet, will be a spontaneous decision
  • Tools: Audacity, sfxr, Paint.NET

I’ll try to get in

Hey!

It’s been some time. Actually, LD22 (2011) was the first and the last time I produced something halfway serious, even though it was far from being finished. For this weekend, I’d like once again to get all of my creativity together and make something great out of it. Unfortunately I’ve got tons of uni stuff to do, but I’ll definitely try to use all the time I can get for LD.

(Enough of that blah, nobody’s gonna care ayway.)

Stuff I’ll be using:

  • Language: C++ or Java (whatever I feel like)
  • IDE: VS 2013 or Eclipse
  • Graphics: GIMP, Paint.NET
  • Sound: Audacity, sfxr
  • Libraries: iunno…

Hope everybody is as motivated as I am right now! Have a good one!

Calm before the storm

(EDIT: Note: It actually already started, but I wasn’t able to submit my post due to the site being offline :P)

Hey everybody! I just got a bunch of relaxing sleep (it’s about 3 AM) and now I’m motivated as hell. Let’s do this!

I actually wanted to do a live stream, but it seems that this won’t be possible without any issues, however I’ll try to do a timelapse instead.

And just because everyone else does it, I’ll show you my workstation:

workstation

A second screen would really be incredibly useful, but I dont have one :/ At least I have a second keyboard, because I don’t like programming on immovable and non-adjustable laptop keyboards. Oh, and that thing on the left doesn’t just look like an external HDD I fixed with duckt tape, It actually is.

Anyway, dood luck everybody! ūüėČ

By the way…

… I decided to create a small base project, so that I don’t have to start with the dull stuff. The base project contains some code (< 100 lines), which sets up a simple SFML window and runs a game loop. Furthermore, the package contains all needed SFML binaries and a Visual Studio project with settings I prefer over VS’ default settings.

The whole package can be found here: http://a.pomf.se/jb64h.zip

Cheers!

Since I participated in LD 4 times already, but never managed to get something finished (mostly because something got in my way and partly because I was just too uncreative) I am slightly demotivated. However, after taking a look at the 1st theme voting round, which features some royal-class stuff, I decided to kick my demotivation into the a.. and give it another try!

In order to make something useful, I will be using the following tools:

  • IDE: Visual Studio Express 2013
  • Language: C++
  • Libraries: OpenGL or SFML (that’ll be decided on-the-fly, but I will probably choose the latter, as it allows for faster coding)
  • Tools: GIMP and Paint.NET for GFX, sfxr and Audacity for SFX (maybe LMMS, even though I doubt that I’ll have time for making music)

Cheers.

Probably halfway in

Greetings!

I am probably halfway in, meaning I’ll try to do my best but it may turn out to become the worst since I am on the road all of Saturday and have limited time on Sunday.

This will be my 4th time, and hopefully the first time to be successful (unlikely – but who knows ūüėČ ).

Stuff I am going to use:

  • Language: C++
  • IDE: VS 2012
  • Libraries: SFML
  • Tools: Paint.NET, LMMS, sfxr

Warm-up progress I’ve made so far:

LD27wup

I may as well expect the worst.

Have a good one! aVoX out.

I’m in for LD25, whih is my second one.

  • Language: C++ or PureBasic
  • IDE: VS2012 or built-in
  • Libraries: SFML for C++
  • Tools: Paint.NET, sfxr, LMMS

Also, a fun fact: The theme voting I just submitted is unintentionally horizontally (or vertically, depending on how you see it) symmetric:

… for the second time. Because I failed badly last time, I will freakin’ think before I get into it without a slight seem of an idea.

Which tools nad languages I am finally going to use depends on lots of things, including the final concept/idea and its complexity and as the whim takes me. The following stuff will hopefully help my reach my target:

  • IDE: Visual Studio 2012 RC Visual Studio 2010 or Eclipse or PureBasic
  • Languages: C++ or Java or PureBasic
  • Libraries: SFML (C++) or SlickUtil (Java)
  • Graphics: Gimp, Paint.Net
  • Sounds: SFXR, Audacity
  • Other stuff: Coffee, anything edible, coffee, Winamp, a toilet, coffee

I’m out.

I’m done. I have not finished my game but the last thing I want to do now is programming. All the motivation is gone and so are fun and excitement. Yesterday I worked for about 20 hours and today for about 12 hours and the ‘thing’ I managed to create by now doesn’t even deserve to be called a ‘game’. What was the problem? I don’t really know.

My progress so far: A nice working base for a game. The¬† game itself isn’t really existing: 2 halfway working levels (including solid, non-solid and ladder tiles … at least they worked!) and the player’s character that doesn’t do anything but following your keys (no jumping and stuff like this) – that’s not really a game.

What went wrong? As said before: I can’t say, but there are some things I want to change in the future:

  • doing the warm-up
  • planning the program: I went straight on to the programming. In the beginning I wanted it to be a shooter, many hours of exhausting coding later I thought the theme would fit better to a simple puzzle game, but when I saw I wouldn’t finish on time, I changed everything to a “do this – do that – press this button – use that item” game. If I focused on a single game idea from the beginning I would be cheering right now. All in all the programming was a waste of time.
  • paying more attention to graphics: Until some hours ago I just used my dev sprites (grid maps, hitbox sprites etc.). When I finished the first level I already had a bad feeling about the time. When I began with the second level some time ago, I thought about giving up.
  • structuring the code: Because this is my first LD I was extremely stressed from the beginning and just did the code. If a teacher or a professional looked at it, they would commit suicide, that means: One big main function and a bunch of structs without methods, getters/setters and inheritance.

It’s really a pity that everything worked out as feared. I wasted my weekend sitting in front of a computer and doing useless stuff.

If anybody cares, here are some screenshots of my dead birth:

(That weird rectangle with zeros and ones is a byte. Yeah, you are playing a byte.)

#1 and #2 show The Byte in a nightly city, the first and only working level.

#3 shows a devmap. Yellow tiles are ladder tiles, black tiles are solids and the pepper marks the end. (the map is called “The Outskirts” because it was supposed to be an extension of the first map, before I gave up)

Hopefully this post can help someone, otherwise it would be another waste of time.

See you in the next LD48, aVoX.

I’m in for the 1st time.

Hello fellas!

This is the first time I’ll attend Ludum¬† Dare.¬† I’ll probably not finish the game but we’re all here for the lulz.

Stuff I am going use:

  • Language: C++ on MS Visual Studio 2010 (yeah, it will be Windows only)
  • Libraries ‘n stuff: SFML and maybe my own little 2D engine (only if I finish and release it before Friday night-wish me luck)
  • Graphics tools: Paint (<- just a joke), GIMP,¬† Paint.NET
  • Sound tools: SFXR, BFXR, maybe Audacity
  • Other stuff: coffee, coffee, Winamp, coffee
