Go enjoy some angsty teenage poetry about how cool it is to stay in your room all day and complain about broken radiators, and sharp pillows.

A big thank you to everyone, who joined in for the stream today. The game is nearly done. All I need to do is add some more enemies, to vary up combat.
Here’s what I’ve accomplished today:

  • Created all the assets
  • Random Level Generation
  • Basic and Advanced combat
  • Enemy AI, damage and health

Things for tomorrow:

  • Add more enemies
  • Win and loss screens
  • More weapons, if I have time?
  • Custom cursor, probably
  • Make some nice UI

If you want to get updated, my twitter is @MageArtylo, and if you would like to join in helping me develop, by keeping me sane – http://twitch.tv/artyllo is the place for you to follow, but tomorrow… now I’m going to sleep.
Take care of your beanstalks, folks…

Hi five!

christmassIt’s that time of the year for putting on dressing gowns, making games and playing DnD (Dungeons and Dragons).

This time I’ve decided to go in for my fifth compo with a hand tied behind my back and some restrictions, in order to spice it up a notch and add that hardcore beast mode coding factor.

My handicaps are:

  • Only use 1-bit colours (black and white) for art
  • Design and code the core mechanic in 4 hours

What will this achieve, you may ask? Well… Making the art in two colours will sort of make it more difficult to convey what I’m actually showing, but make it easier to stay consistent when making art assets. The real push will be the 4 hour deadline on the core mechanic. This is mostly stolen from Cactus’ talks on game development, but will actually push me to make the mechanic first, without distractions, polishing and refining it over the next 44 hours. Hopefully this will make for an interesting twist on my part.

Otherwise, I’m going for an arcade, score attack, limited lives sort of game, with a fair amount of difficulty, as to get those fourth grader nickels from the arcade machine I’ll never release.

Anyway, here are the things I’ll be using, shamelessly copied from August’s LDJAM. Nothing has changed outside of me purchasing the Professional Edition of GameMaker: Studio:

  • Programming
    • GameMaker (GML)
    • Code::Blocks (C++)(OpenGL)
    • Eclipse (Java)(LWJGL)
    • Unity (C#)
  • Artwork
    • Blender (3D)
    • Macromedia Flash 8 (2D) #flashisnotdead
    • Photoshop CS6 (2D)
    • Paint.NET (2D)
    • Trust Slimline Design (Tablet)
  • Music
    • Casio CTK-450 (Synth)
    • Puldin Guitar from 1991 (Acoustic Guitar)
    • FLStudio 11
  • SFX
    • SFXR
    • Audacity
  • Misc.
    • Notepad++ (for quick notes)
    • MS Word (for writing)
    • OBS (for streaming)

Again, I’ll be streaming the entire event on http:/twitch.tv/artyllo. Chat is always open, so drop by if you want and we’ll have a chat about random stuff and ask questions about me, programming and/or game development, art, music, ect. I’ll probably also have a timelapse uploaded on my YouTube after the event has finished, which can be found here.

For instant updates and tons of gifs, please follow me on twitter at @MageArtylo!

That’s all from me for now. Have a pleasant Ludum Dare and good luck to you all!
See you in the arena, mortals!

Ahh… It’s time to put on the dressing gown for another round of Ludum Dare goodness. I’ll be entering the compo for to fourth time, if that has any significance. Compared to last time, I’ll try to go for a more simplistic game instead of some overly-complex mechanics and algorithms, but it still depends on the theme.
dissapointSomething I really want to try this time is do a hand-drawn, watercolour style for the art, instead of pixels. I’ve gotten pretty bored from doing the same thing over and over again, so a bit of variation won’t hurt, I think. Having the time to design more things and focus on levels or such will definitely vary from my previous games, which mostly ether had poor choice of colours, ether badly drawn tiles, ether quickly put together or rushed assets. Dedicating some more time will definitely have an impact on the overall quality of the game.
Another thing I want to try is using some techniques for rapid game development. I’d normally leave the code for last, in order to have all the graphics and have a more finished look, while still developing the game itself. This time I will try to do the programming first in order to have the prototype mechanics on the first day and not worry about them. Then I’ll have time to implement the graphics and polish the game, and bugfix everything on the second day.
Another thing I want to try is actually do some story development and writing for the game. I’ve been doing some writing on some D&D campaigns I’m running and the reception has been good so far, so I might incorporate some of that style of writing in order to develop some background for the world the game is set in, and probably some character development to go with it.
Music is a thing that probably needs the least work for me. I just sit down on the synth for like an hour or two and make something that sounds fairly good to me. I’ve started learning acoustic guitar, but I don’t feel I’ve gotten the grip of it enough to use it in conjunction with the piano. I’ll probably stay using my bass synth for that sort of stuff.

For those who want to know what tools I have on my belt for this compo:

  • Programming
    • GameMaker (GML)
    • Code::Blocks (C++)
    • Eclipse (Java)
    • Unity (C#)
  • Artwork
    • Blender (3D)
    • Macromedia Flash 8 (2D) #flashisnotdead
    • Photoshop CS6 (2D)
    • Paint.NET (2D)
    • Trust Slimline Design (Tablet)
  • Music
    • Casio CTK-450 (Synth)
    • Puldin Guitar from 1991 (Acoustic Guitar)
    • FLStudio 11
  • SFX
    • SFXR
    • Audacity
  • Misc.
    • Notepad++ (for quick notes)
    • MS Word (for writing)
    • OBS (for streaming)

I’ll be streaming the entire event on http:/twitch.tv/artyllo. Chat is always open, so drop by if you want and we’ll have a chat about random stuff. I’ll probably also have a timelapse uploaded on my YouTube after the event has finished, which can be found here.

That’s all from me for now. Have a pleasant Ludum Dare and good luck to you all!
See you on the battlefield!

ALL PRAISE THE LORD ALMIGHTY!

So, I’ll be participating in my third LD, which is pretty cool…I guess.
I’ll also be taking part in the 48 hour compo this time, cause I need more motivation to make games and even in the jams, in which I’ve been, I’ve always made all the content from scratch and worked alone. I mostly went to the jam, because of the extra day…which I spend in school…kinda pointless.

Anyway, I’ll be trying GameMaker this time, instead of MMF2. Mostly because I want to have a more flexible dev environment. I’ll be doing full GML and none of that drag-n-drop stuff… I kinda have a dislike for drag-n-drop development now, so yeah.
I’ll be doing art either in Flash 8 or in GraphicsGale. In the end, I’ll probably go for pixel art with GraphicsGale, because I’m more comfortable with it, instead of drawing everything in Flash 8.

Sound will be done in SFXR, FL Studio 11 and Audacity. I’ll be making the music on a synth (aka the only instrument that I own and I am able to play without having my hands cut off by music critics).
I’ll also try to make a livestream on Twitch or just a timelapse on my Youtube.

Summary of tools:

  • Engine:
    • GameMaker Studio
  • Art:
    • Flash 8
    • GraphicsGale
    • Photoshop
    • Paint.NET
  • Music:
    • Casio CTK-450
    • FL Studio 11
  • SFX:
    • Audacity
    • SFXR

See you there! ^-^
