What Lies Beneath – Post Mortem

PLAY THE GAME HERE >>>> http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-29/?action=preview&uid=19384

Restricted by the need to work, eat and sleep it was necessary to attempt to create the game in well under the 48 actual complete hours.

This seemed to form as much of our brief for the game as the theme and so it became as much about strict resource management as Beneath the Surface. As we took our time at the concept stage this meant we had a clear direction to aim for and thankfully everything went pretty smoothly in its creation – using Construct 2 our 2 man team split the work into design/ assets and programming/ sound.

Our game was designed to require limited assets and animation (using post production techniques to give them life) so we could concentrate on level design, mood and gameplay.

An excellent low stress game jam! Look forward to the next!

We would like to thank Tesco’s for their cheesy balls and Belgium for their beer without whom none of this would be possible!!! And big, big handclaps and gracious bows to the creators of Construct2.

Cheers Ludum!

De bomb Da bomb Players Response so far….

In Summary:

It looks pretty good and sounds okay but needs more facing angles on the moving characters not just side on and some sound fx to go with the music.

It’s hard to workout to begin with but the actual game mechanics really click with people once they figure it out fully (HINT: THE OLD DOCTOR GUY CURES THE FLASHING RED PEOPLE!……)

The levels work well enough but needs to be more of them and the Collision detection needs some refining.

For every success there was a catch but the success i wanted was to introduce a decent game mechanic that worked well and i feel i did that. thanks to all who played and review my little game, every one of you made valid and useful remarks and certainly food for thought if/when i decide to take the game further!

……bring on dare 28!!!!

p.s. GO PLAY DEADLY SUNRISE!!!!, it’s pretty damn awesome, best of the jam for me by far!

A Fine Postemus Mortemus of ‘De Bomb Da Bomb’….

So happy to have got it all done in time!

Check out the game here>>>> http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-27/?action=preview&uid=19384

I managed to squeeze out some pixel art goodness and a superfunkypants soundtrack and squished it in-between some tasty action puzzle gameplay. By pure accident the ‘Mechanic’ pixel character is a dead ringer for Damon Albarn!?!  not intentional but a plus for Blur fans i guess!

GOOD: Tactical gameplay implimented just as i’d hoped too.

Pixel Art + Soundtrack have good balance and fit the idea well

BAD:    A few minor bugs but nothing totally game breaking (i think/hope!?!?!)

lacking animation on characters, should point in right directions!

Needs loads more levels and variation etc. with time it may happen…

UGLY:  My poor Dried up, tired old eyeballs, strictly no monitors/tv screens tommorow if possible…

Mighty pleased with the 9th placing in the jam humor ratings, the fact the game was made as a satire joke makes it feel like a big win for us. Thanks to everyone who played our game. Roll on the next jam!

60 Second Bad Boy (post mortem)

Posted by
Thursday, January 3rd, 2013 3:30 pm

Well here we are, two weeks or so after the comp ended and i have to say i enjoyed my first game making weekend as much as i’d hoped too! There’s a nice sense of achievement in my belly at the very thought of my little game existing from out of my fuzzy head and in to the world…. So anyway, enough silly babble and smarmy yarn….

I have fiddled around with pixel artwork for a good while now and this project brought together that harmonious joy of blocky stuff and very limited colour palettes….and that’s what i’m happy with most graphically. The late 80’s style restraint on the palette and the consistency of all the artwork in general. downside is a lack of much animation i guess. My short timelapse video will show you the creation of stuff in more detail: https://vimeo.com/55937163

Oddly i think the greatest thing from the weekend for me was the matching of overall pace and soundtrack which helps the rather limited gameplay to have way more frantic appeal.  BIG MENTION though goes to TWEAKBENCH : http://tweakbench.com/   for there amazingly good nes/8bit vst plugins that gave me just right sounds to use on this game! cheers them’s guys.

Well it seems my main intentions were to create an old school game with old school game sensibilities….a little too much it seems.

Im pretty crappy at playing games as a rule (except at Burnout 1,2,3 and Lightforce on the ZX Speccy. All challengers welcome!!!) But i do love a good challenge and a way to get around the fact that im also pretty ropey at tight programming (hence the use of good ‘ole Stencyl and very basic mouse click input) was to amp the difficulty curve through the roof!  I wussed out a bit by adding the training bit but i wanted people to at least see all the levels after braking my balls designing the damn things! I really should have made better hit boxes for the objects and a preparation countdown before each 5 second round…… I forgot that most people don’t mind high difficulty if they think its actually fair or totally just the own fault that they lost.

That sums it up, im  pleased with the overall result and glad that a fair amount of you generally liked it, but i have learned a decent lesson about gameplay….. A difficult game  is okay but a FAIR game is better.

YEY! congrats to Madball – crowned 1st ultimate badboy!

Another fine winner!

Here is one of those annoying little blue balloons that everyone hates from the game as your prize! 😛

So as anyone who has already played my Wario-Ware like game “60 Second Bad Boy” knows (and a big super thanks and hand claps to all who have so far….)

Here it is the cheeky scamp of a game:     http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-25/?action=preview&uid=19384

What have i learned so far…. It’s bloody hard to beat all the levels!!!!   So sorry for any RSI- like mouse clicking strain (someone has already had that happen to them… oops, sorry!) Its a bit harder than i thought while i was building it. but the intention was to make it old school hard so kind of a big win for me there at least!?!… I guess it was way easier for me to beat it as i knew the levels (obviously, silly me 😛 ) and was play testing it very, very often, which is dead easy when each round only lasts 5 seconds.

So anyway….. THE GAUNTLET HAS NOW BEEN LAID DOWN LADIES ‘N’ GENTS!!!!!!!  limber up and become the first ULTIMATE BAD BOY(or girl!) to beat my evil game.

oh wow, i guess this has all become a bit meta and im now the over arching villian inviting people to play my evil game about a villian…… nice, i’ll take that and use that to explain the game next time to make it sound more pretentious and arty! :)

or maybe not.

well post a comment on my page if you manage to beat this naughty arsehole of a game and i will praise you highly and allow you passage into the exclusive “ultimate bad boy club!” (which is just a name really, no free shit or parties im afraid..)

Here’s a link to a lovely timelaspe of the last 5hr crunch (condensed to 4mins ish) of me doing the childish pixel art and stupid fast music for the last levels. enjoy hombre’s.
