Some thoughts on Recoil Rampage

I guess you’d call this a post mortem.

Anyway now that it’s been over a week since Ludum Dare started I figure I’d talk a little about my entry.

I am extremely happy with how the game turned out. Obviously a game made in such a short period of time can’t be perfect but I feel like I’ve made a really good game. This feels like bragging, sorry.

People’s comments have also been mostly positive. Shaun Spalding gave it quite good praise on his stream and that made me feel really happy about it.

The comments on Newgrounds have been good as well, some just state that they enjoy it but others provide more detail critique which is nice.

But people have also brought up some issues with the game. Most of them I agree with.

1) The game is scrolling for no apparent reason.
Yeah at first I thought of this as an endless runner so it made sense for the game to scroll. Then I realized that it didn’t really turn out like an endless runner but kept the effect because it made the background less static. It also made the blood move off screen in a cool way.

This will most likely be fixed in an update.

2)The spikes are way too tough.

It’s interesting because I made them move slow so you can get a chance at avoiding them but making them slow makes them tougher because they stay on screen for longer. I blame a lack of proper testing. It’s also the only obstacle you can’t shoot.

I think if I simply make them faster the problem is fixed.

3) Walls don’t block you. They also don’t block enemy bullets.

This is because I coded the walls in a strange way. I have a theoretical idea on how to fix them so I guess we’ll see how that goes. But yeah the walls are weird. Should be an easy fix.

4) Mobile port?
Some people have said that this would make a great mobile game. I completely agree and I have made a functional android port of the game.
It’s only available for invited alpha testers as I want to test some balance changes before making it available on the public.

If you are interested in providing feedback for an android port/update e-mail me: Contact@AndreasL.net
You need an android phone and a google account!

That’s it! I’ll answer any questions about the game in the comments. If you haven’t played the game go do it!

I really appreciate all the comments and videos! Thanks everyone!

Alright so it’s day 2.
I have some stuff planned for today, first of I settled for a name and made a quick logo.

I really want to replace the character, it’s an old asset I drew that I decided to re-purpose.
Anyway less talk more work! Good luck all!

Almost a game!

It’s starting to feel like a game but it’s really tough to control.

We’ve got progress!

So I wasn’t feeling very good about this jam yesterday. I felt like the idea I had in mind was kind of stupid and boring.
But today I kept on working and I’ve got a bit of progress!

First off it’s something you can call a game. You can die and lose and the game restarts.
Secondly It’s looking pretty neat!

So here’s a gif! It looks a bit hectic but It’s not that bad when you’re playing!

Unnamed Game

Unnamed Game

Game explanation:
Jump on platforms and collect coins. When you “steal” a coin that platform will react (and turn white) and it will start spawning hazards on itself (turrets and spikes)

Also don’t touch the borders of the screen or you die.

I’m in (I think)

I’m In. At least I think I am. I’m no stranger to making games on a tight time constraint and I do like it. Usually when I do it it’s on my own terms but I would like to participate.
I might have some other stuff going on this weekend and if the theme that gets picked doesn’t inspire a good enough idea I might just give up.

I’ll give it my best shot though!

I’ll be using Game Maker Studio with a html5 export and photoshop.

For sounds I’ll probably use SFXR.

If I timelapse I’ll use chronolapse which seems to work.

Let’s hope for snowman!
