This would’ve been my 9th (or 8th?) Ludum Dare entry, and I haven’t completely missed one before. I somehow totally forgot it was even happening until yesterday, and when I did, the theme didn’t feel very inspiring and felt more like a rule than a theme to me (much like the “Entire game on one screen” rule from exactly 2 years ago). It’s a real shame that I’ve had to give up on this LD, plus the next one in April will be hard to do due to exams coming up… :(

I had some ideas and even a small prototype, but didn’t wanna submit an unfinished and lousy game just for the sake of having a streak. Anyway, I wish good luck to anyone who’s still going, they all look great πŸ˜€ I’ll see you guys in the next Dare!

…But I forgot this weekend was Ludum Dare. Damn…

A couple minutes ago I Β was like, “I wonder what’s going on in LD, wait…OMGNSOGFBASBGOJDFBGAOB”

That’s when I realised I messed up. Time to piece something together and hope for the best… :(

When your game’s resource folder gets corrupted…

So, Windows 10 decided to do one of its random restarts, ultimately corrupting all of my game’s images in the procress.

I’m so glad that eclipse kept a temporary backup, otherwise I’d have been screwed. There’d be no way I could recreate all of those textures (and levels, as they are generated from an image) and still be able to add in all the features I need for a “complete” game before the Jam comes to a close.

Needless to say, I’ll be keeping a backup every few minutes from now on. Keep going everyone!

Also, if anyone knows how to stop Windows 10 from doing random reboots, I’d love to know. It happens too often to me (around once every one or two weeks) with no warning.

2nd day’s over. I’m doing the jam again this time as I missed out on almost the entire day yesterday.

Anyway, here’s a gif of a “pow” block that I put into the game. Cool, huh?

Second day progress image/broken gif!

I made a gifΒ image. of my progress. Hopefully it works, you might need to click on it.Β The gif doesn’t work, so you’ll just have to go with the image for now.

The aim of the game is to follow the ancient cave drawings to escape the temple. This is one level. The drawing shows person with a parachute over fire with an up arrow, showing that you must pick up the parachute and be carried up by the smoke from the lava. It’s going really well.

Everyone else’s is looking great, keep it up! πŸ˜€

End of day 1

Ok, I got to the end of day 1- missed most of it(12+hours!!!) which will be made up for in the third day… I’m going to enter in the jam because of it. Good thing there isn’t a rating system for this LD!

Here is the progress so far (~4 hours worth):


First of all I must say that I am trying to work on a limited colour set (only 8 colours, minus the background shading).

My whole idea is that you are exploring a temple and must use the drawings on the wall as hints to help you progress to the red button on the top right hand corner of the screen. In this example, the cave drawing shows an up-arrow, a person holding some sort of parachute, and a small fire beneath. This means that the player must use a parachute and hold it up over the fire to elevate themselves over the wall!

I was thinking of having a neat little inventory system to hold items, but I’ve opted for only one item at a time instead, to make it more challenging (and easier for me to code :P)

They’re all looking great, good luck and I can’t wait to play them! πŸ˜€

Fixed collision bugs and level generation!

I fixed that collision bug nice and smoothly πŸ˜‰ just had to make the left and right boxes smaller…

And I used this nice terrain generation! It’s not super efficient, as I could have used 2 dimensional arrays… but what’s the fun in that? πŸ˜›

By now I thought I was the master of 2D collision detection in java…

The picture below shows red boxes, which are the bounds of the blocks in my game. The red boxes on the blue rectangle are the players bounding boxes.


Java thinks the player box marked “left” is colliding with the block underneath.

They are not colliding.

Missed almost a whole day due to family visits.

However, it allowed me time to think of ideas- I had some really good ones for other themes. Not for this one.

I have a good one now, I’m having my first go at a puzzle game! Everyone’s looks great so far, good luck! πŸ˜€

This is my eighth Ludum Dare entry…. wow.

Unfortunately I’ll be interrupted again, so I may enter the Jam and use the Sunday + Monday (and Saturday evening). I’m pretty mixed about the themes.

I wanted to try and change my tools around this time, but I was too busy to learn a new language (started learning C but found out there’s a lot more to learn if I want to create graphical games, so that’s a no-go for now).


Eclipse w/ Java


Bfxr, Audacity, and some other stuff for possibly making my own music if I have time

LWJGL for sounds


I always want to try something new, and I also want to add a rule for myself (e.g. only use an 8-bit colour palette or something).

May have to switch to the jam… :(

For my first time in almost 2 years, I may have to go for the jam instead.

I didn’t have enough time on my hands due to final exams coming up, so I tried to balance out the time but got way ahead of myself and went for my full-on standard Ludum Dare game, and right now I’m stuck without sound and there’s still a few bugs plus LOADS more features that I want to add.

I only have a few hours after school tomorrow, so my only regret is that people will expect a lot more seeing as it is a jam game. Hopefully people will understand :)

Anyway, good luck for everyone else still going, looks like I’ll be joining the jammers tomorrow.

Decor, creativity, and radioactive dogs?

A fair amount has happened since I last posted. Here is a screeny before I explain:


So, for the quick changes, I decided to change the “plutonium” to a made-up element called “apothekium”- this is to make my game more creative, and because I don’t know enough about plutonium’s properties to make an accurate representation of it within my game.

Also, I added an entity called an “apothek” (the small dog-like thing that can be seen a few blocks away from the apothekium). It’s got some cool properties because it will radiate any type of radiation it comes in contact with!

Finally, I added a nicer background for better presentation.

Still got a LOT to do, and I really don’t want to run into tomorrow because that’s when school starts and these upcoming weeks are very important, which is why I’m taking a quick revision break now!
