ReptilePolitik LD35 Post Mortem

Well, I made this for the Compo and I’m just now doing the “official” release post.

This was my first Ludum Dare! Unfortunately, any time I’ve wanted to participate, I’ve been out of town or slammed with work. This weekend was no exception to the business of these weekends (why do they ALWAYS fall on my busiest weekends???). I was at a dinner Friday night, only able to brainstorm some ideas (which I scrapped later). Saturday morning I came up with my brilliant Reptilian-themed game and began drawing it all out. I worked on art assets for two hours, and then my Saturday was gone — I had to go to a friend’s house, and that lasted well into the night.

So finally, I got Sunday to work. So all in all, this game was made in around 10-12 hours. While this did have some effects on the gameplay, I betcha I got WAY more sleep than most of you.

This was my first game. Period. I’d made a little, itsy-bitsy game (if one could call it that) where the player moves around on the screen. So, that having been said, this was a really interesting experience. I ended up using SO many timers in my code, and it was awfully messy too.

In the end, this was a game about being yourself (just kidding, but feel free to interpret it as “modern art” if you wish). It is very hard for most people, which I find quite funny as an excellent typer. I’ve thought about making it easy and progressively harder, but I figure that this game is the game that I made, it has very little merit outside of the fact that I made it in a very small amount of time, so therefore, I’ll keep it excruciatingly hard.

I’m gonna join my first Ludum Dare! I’m torn between an rpg/platformer or a text adventure of some kind… I guess I’ll figure it out when the theme comes out!

I’m going to be using Love2d, Photoshop, and Audacity to create my game.
