I wish you guys uploaded more games that can be played in the browser. I’ve been downloading mostly *.exe files all day.

My antivirus software is constantly telling me, “Hey listen, are you sure about this? You are? Okay, cool but seriously… look at your life, look at your choices.”

Otherwise, so far so good in playing/rating games!

I’ve participated in LD a few times in the past, but never actually submitted anything!

So my game, if you choose to accept it is called Cow Duck Fever!

Switch between a cow or a duck, and try to get a really high score! Maybe even higher than your friends 😉

Testing my game. I made it so the character shapeshifts when you press the Shift key. Great, right?

Can anyone think about what happens on Windows when you press Shift a bunch of times?

I’ll give you a minute.

That’s right! The Sticky Keys window pops up, interrupting anything the user is currently doing!

…. sigh. I guess I’ll use the Spacebar, like some sort of silly person.

I’ve been stuck at work all day! My game is sitting on a computer at home, so I can’t submit it!

Sadly, I couldn’t start developing my game until a few hours ago. I was really hoping to submit for the compo, but it looks like the Jam deadline is in my near future.

I’m slightly disappointed, but I’m happy I still get a chance to submit anything at all! :)

Post-mortem: Scene2d.ui screwed me

So, I had a bug today that I couldn’t skip. When I started my game, it filled up my PC’s memory completely in about a minute, breaking literally everything that was running. I had to fix it to continue.

8 hours of hacking at this problem.

I just fixed the bug. It was with Scene2d.ui’s function Table.drawDebug(). If you set debug, apparently it runs this blindingly expensive operation that constantly creates new objects. Yay.

I followed a tutorial telling me to do this. And who would guess that something that draws literally a few lines on a screen would break my whole computer lol

8 hours of not actual game developing haulted… due to a single line of code I would have eventually taken out anyways….. FFFFFFUUUUU–

 

Long story short, my LD time is done. But now the bug is fixed, I’m going to continue my game to see if the fun factor is there or not. I think I definitely came up with an idea at least worth exploring and finishing an alpha.

Slow start, but on my way

I’m proud! I came up with an idea that I like the first 5 minutes of the jam (usually takes a couple hours).

I’m also sad, lol, because there have been some snags in the rendering. A bug that took hours to fix, and I couldn’t continue without it fixed.

I fixed it, and got a lot done quickly afterward, but that initial bug was a bit of a game jam boner kill… which is why I’m going to bed now so I can get my mojo back tomorrow :)

Here’s a screenshot of what I have so far. Randomly generated worlds, a minimap, and a spaceship.

Sadly, I didn’t get much inspiration from the topic. And it looks like I’m not the only one, lol.

I’ll take this time to start another gamedev project, so at least I wouldn’t waste the weekend. Maybe I’ll start something with one of the topics that I actually liked. I’m disappointed in myself a bit, but in the end, it’s still a learning experience.

Good luck to everyone else! I’ve seen some good progress from some of you guys!

Gotta admit, not loving the theme or the ideas I’m coming up with… sadly.

Though, the ideas that other people have posted seem somewhat interesting. I can’t wait to see what you guys come up with!

I’m gonna go to sleep and hope that I get a new perspective on it tomorrow morning. I suggest the same for you as well if you’re in a similar boat.

“Quarter Quell” Ludum Dare Week!

I have to be honest, I mostly didn’t participate in the last LD because I wasn’t a huge fan of the theme. I know, I suck, but it’s the past now…

….. But now, to make up for my laziness, I am bringing the past back!

Starting this Friday, I’m having a Quarter Quell (#HungerGamesReference). For a week, I will make a game based on one of the 25 first topics, and it would be cool if you guys joined me in this effort! If not, it’s cool lol.

You can pick any topic (or topics) from the random list below. I went to www.random.org/sequences/ and randomly selected 10 out of the 25 numbers:

Hey, so I’m going to try this LD challenge….. maybe, lol.

I’m not completely excited by the list of themes, so we’ll see depending on the winning theme.

 

My plan is to not do any coding until tomorrow.

Right now, I’m developing my idea with a paper and pen. And I’ve already decided to include a kitten mode (because, although I’m a capricorn, kittens should have at least tied with goats… just sayin).

Made a general list of what classes I would need and what they should do. I also have a general idea of how things should play.

Then, I’m gonna go to bed (it’s 11 o’clock pm here right now). Tomorrow is dedicated to coding, and the day after is dedicated to getting the code and content to beta.

Then, when I wake up, I’ll be going to a matinee of The Hobbit, which means I’ll be in the theater for however long the movie is (5 hours, probably).

Then I’m going to go home, have a beer (no more than one) and then BOOM

I’ll take a power nap

And then ULTRABOOM, I start coding.

I *really* hate how LD falls on Hobbit weekend, but whatever. I’ll live, lol.

Question about “base code” rule

Base code and personal code libraries are allowed, but should be declared and shared with the community prior to beginning your entry. To do this, make a blog post.

Yeah, so I’m going to make base code (general stuff that I don’t want to worry about over LD weekend, like defining graphic and sound classes, doing some basic MVC stuff, etc)… you know, everything that is not actual game content… and I will provide a link to that stuff in my next blog post.

The question. Is there something that I cannot do beforehand? Like, would defining a “put image onto the screen” class be frowned upon?

If it is, then I can wait. I would just hate setting up game architecture-related classes during my 48 hours.
