This ludum dare started off okay. I got up around 2:30 am on saturday, and the theme was announced at 3. I hadn’t really slept enough.

I spent the first day on the mechanics, loading rooms, and some intro “story”. The biggest problem was the work I put down on the story, as that never made it into the game. I probably spent a good 5 hours on that.

When day one was over I hadn’t gotten too much done, and when I woke up I changed direction of the game. I had a hard time getting up with a good idea where to take the game next, but after a while I decided to make something in the style of Super Crate Box by Vlambeer.

The first problem I encountered was to build a level that worked smoothly with the player movement. I ended up increasing the jump height, but that created new problems as the player would hit the platform above at some places.. After playing around with the movement variables I found something that worked okay.

The next challenge was to make working enemy AI. I don’t have much actual experience with making AI, but I figured it couldn’t be too difficult. Making the enemies work went pretty smoothly, but it took time as expected. I also ran into problems when I tried to change variables of the enemies, but I’m pretty happy with how they turned out.
Once I was done with this it started getting pretty late, and I had lots left to do. I managed to add the score counter, the lose screen, and a small menu. By now I was pretty exhausted, and I had to go to bed not too late as I had school the day after. Anyways, I finished around 1am, without music, and no time for any real polishing.

I’m happy with my entry, but it could’ve gone better.

Things I learned:

  • Don’t do story, always make gameplay first
  • Scope down more. No, MORE!
  • Really really try to have your mechanics complete by day one, so you can spend day 2 making music, polishing etc.
  • Sleep is good.

I guess these were things I thought I knew before, but I think I have to get even better at them..

I got fair ratings, slightly under avarage in everything. I’m happy with my results, but I wanna do better next time. One day I have to beat my personal best, Gunshift, where I placed 87th overall, and 24th in fun. However, the scores are not everything. I finished a ludum dare, for the 7th time, and that is enough to make me happy 😀

Anyways sorry for the quick messy postmortem, see you all next ludum dare! o/
