First Ludum Dare Recap!

Hey all!

Just wanted to say that I’ve had a blast doing Ludum Dare this year. I made my first game using Construct 2, Ableton Live 8, and Paint.Net.

Since I’m not a programmer and this is my first delving into game making, I decided to do something a little heavier on art and less heavy on gameplay (something to focus on learning for the next one!). With that in mind, I created what I called “art exploration.” The theme, growing and two-button controls I approached by deciding to design long canvases that were thin and then grew to a larger side. After I designed several, I picked a handful.

So the player, whom I decided to name Derek, drifts along with a simple Asteroids-esque control system where you’re not quite in control through several scenes. These scenes grow and then contract, so as the player goes along he or she is able to see more and less art, giving breath and taking it away from the game. Choosing to only spend about 6 or 7 hours on it (getting married soon; knew I wouldn’t have much time), I added a couple of other effects and related it to a short quote I had seen before (in an effort to unify the piece).

Anyway, I’ve had a great time, and I’ve been surprised at the reactions which have been supportive and constructive. Thanks guys!
