SPACE JUNK #22 and Post Mortem

I wanted to do a post mortem a while ago but I figured I’d wait to see what SPACE JUNK ended up getting, but that day is here! SPACE JUNK got 22nd overall which is none too shabby! I’ve still been working at it a little bit each day:

Now for a post-mortem and a few points I feel would have helped me:

  • Letting friends test it
  • Spending more time on SFX
  • Responsiveness
  • Considering audience

No one really tested the game before I submitted it. It wasn’t really that I didn’t want my friends to test it, it’s just that by the time I felt I had something to show I was nearly out of time and they were at work. Nonetheless, I think actually planning a time for them to try the game out next time would work wonders! One complaint I got consistently was that the turret bullets fired too slowly. I’ve since boosted the speed, but it was not something I had considered annoying until someone brought it up.

Another complaint was grating sound effects. I admit I didn’t really spend a lot of time on the sound effects, most of them were straight out of SFXR. I think more time went into the music than the sound effects.

Speaking of the sound effects, adding a bit responsiveness would have been useful as well. Over time, I felt like it was very difficult to tell when you were getting hit and when you weren’t. I’m working on that! Sound effects are a good way to queue that sort of message as well.

Finally, I tried to consider the audience in terms of how long the game was and being able to skip dialogue, but not actually in the gameplay itself. I’m still a bit unsure of this, but I think I might try considering my target audience and their game experiences more (why do they play the games they do?).

I had a great deal of fun with this! Incidentally, this is also the first reason I’ve had to use Twitter and I’m liking it so far! I hope I can manage to turn it into something more decent in the future.

Thanks for reading and rating! Can’t wait until next time!
