How Soup Was Made

I thought that I would give a quick explanation of how I achieved the graphics in my entry Soup seeing as it is shockingly simple.


It uses a technique called ‘Metaballs’ that is often used for water effects. You will find plenty of information about this technique if you google for it. Most people would assume that this effect would require a complicated shader but in fact my fragment shader is only three lines of code:

So yes, the entire game was made up of a gradient circle sprite, a gradient line sprite and three lines of shader code.

The magic has now been ruined!

I hope that this technique helps other people on their quest to become a game developer.
