This is my first ludum dare but I’ve been following the event for a really long time now. One of the thigs I liked the most were the postmortems, so here is mine.

Objectives

Without clear objectives it is hard to state what is good and what is bad. My objectives were really clear. First and more important was finishing a game. That was the whole reason I joined ludum dare, after years of working in an unfinished project I needed to have something to show. Then I wanted to make a web game so I would learn how to and so that lots of people could try it.

The good

-Game idea: it is a simple idea but it was easy to make a fun game out of it. It was also good because I left all the mechanics for the last day, and most of them for the last hour, so it turned out to be a great idea.

-Dart: I sometimes have to program in javasctipt at work and I really dislike it. As I wanted to do a web game I needed something that compiled to javascript yet was a bit nicer. Unlike other languages that compile to javascript dart has its own virtual machine embedded in a browser, so it was really easy to debug. I only compiled the code to javascript after finishing the event, and it worked flawlessly.

-Keept working despite loosing hope: in the afternoon of the last day I only had a character walking along a field and some sheep following him. The terrain height code was buggy and I did not have any own art. Anyway I just kept working, doing little things that I liked like implementing the behaviour of free sheep. At the end I could finish it and it was worth it.

-Support: the main reason I kept working was my girlfriend supporting me. She also told me how to draw most of the things and more importantly suggested me the idea of the sheperd. She was a good thing.

The bad

-Loosing hope: I had no hope of finishing the game since nearly the start. Because of that I did not even try to do any planning of my time. Also I went to a christmas dinner on saturday night and did not get back home until really late. It is really hard to work so hungover.

-Focusing too much on technical details: I spent more than half the time coding the drawing code and the’phisics’. I tried to polish it for a long time instead of having something playable since the beginning. The game did not start to look playable until about 6 hours before finishing and that was one of the reasons I lost hope.

-Final touches: the art was done in half an hour, the mechanics just out of pure luck and I did not even had time to read the instructions for a second time. I should have left at least a couple of hours to make it look finished(and maybe even do a finish screen).

All in all, I like to play the game and how the animals behave. I know I could have done a better job but I am happy I met my objectives.sheep enchanter gameplay

So please try it and tell me what you think!
