As the summer winds down, it’s time for more Ludum Dare!
Final Round Theme Voting has begun! The highest rated themes from Rounds 1-4 have been collected here for the Final Grand Theme Battl-stravaganza! What theme will be victorious? You decide!
This is the one that counts!
Keynote
Keynoting Ludum Dare 30 is Joel “Jovoc” Davis, one of the most prolific LD’ers of all time. He’s been doing Ludum Dares for as long as they’ve been 48 hours long. And he’s gonna show you how to cook … games!
I dare ya to have an great weekend!!

“Let the games begin”
After seeing some less than inspired themes, there’s nothing like a fun keynote to get you in the game jam mood
(Side note: the secret ingredient is screen shake)
Clearly.
I thought the secret ingredient was particle effects?! :O
No, that’s the basic ingredient. How can you make game without a good foundation of particle effects?
Bonkers.
Dammit, I really really wanted “What is That in the Distance?” to come through to the final voting. I’m sad now.
I really want Another World or Connected Worlds to win!
Same!
I’m rooting for connected world’s to win as one of my main ideas is built around that theme.
An amazing keynote, made me laugh
Thanks!
My only regret is that I didn’t have a bucket of potato salad to include in the keynote.
Thanks for your hard work man. Well done. 😀
Great keynote! Loved the special fx… blending the guitar was hilarious.
I almost rolled my eyes at that keynote, then I giggled
good work Jovoc
Going by the tradition of round 1 most voted theme winning, seems like this is going to be connected world; Less than pleased about this but it doesn’t bother me that much
(r.i.p headphone users)
So many bullcrap themes man…
haha that was an awesome keynote, great way to get people excited! 😀
This sets the bar way too high. Or is that too low? I don’t remember if this is a limbo competition or what.
I liked this video +
Awesome keynote! 😀
The great keynote made up for the mediocre themes.
confused.. so how do you pronounce ‘Ludum Dare’ ?
The Latin pronunciation (“Ludum Dare” ~= “giving a game”) is the second one in the video. The first one is the pronunciation if you use the English word “dare” instead, which is probably part of the pun in the name.
I’m german, so I’m rolling with the first one (Latin is super easy to pronounce for Germans), but I personally don’t give 2 cents about anybody pronouncing it as english.
So, choose:
1) Do you want to feel superior? Use the Latin pronunciation and correct everybody who doesn’t! Filthy ignorant peasants!
2) Do you feel like a rebel and/or enjoy being corrected by other people? Use the English pronunciation! Down with the system!
Pronounce it however you want.
Roses are Red, Violets are Blue, Omae Wa Mo Shindeiru!
You Are Already Dead FTW!!!!
Anyone else think it’s kinda odd how most of these themes can relate to Portal?
Conspiracy!
I fucking hate themes with the word ‘you’ in them, especially when it begins with ‘you’. Why can’t “you are already dead” be just “already dead”? And “you are not supposed to be here” should simply be “not supposed to be”. Think of how much better LD28 would have been if the theme were “only one”. Would it be inappropriate to change such themes between the slaughter and the voting?
Anyway, I’m not complaining; I got a couple of themes that I would love for them to win.
Yup. I’m pretty sure if the theme would’ve been “only one”, I wouldn’t have dropped out of that one
i totally agree, same goes for ‘everything’ and ‘everyone’
Agreed, but fact is that You Are Already Dead is a reference to the catchphrase “Omae Wa Mo Shindeiru” of the character Kenshiro from Hokuto no Ken (Fist of the north star) anime, which literally translates to “You Are Already Dead”
I see. Well, it’s cool if you watch the show, but with “already dead”, everyone wins!
lame
Well fuck you.
I agree. I prefer to have themes that are clearly open. Sure, some would argue that it’s up to you to interpret the words and make it exciting but some themes do feel unnecessarily restricted and uninspiring.
I actually had never thought of that, I agree so much
Yeah, I hate those bossy themes.
Oh no, not “connected worlds”
There will be 2000 platform games with doors between rooms somehow
Its such an unoriginal idea that RPS warned against it yesterday:
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/08/18/gamescom-2014-doom-silent-hill-mgs-elite-dead-island/ <- required reading!
My idea for connected worlds concerns neither doors nor rooms nor platforming :).
That being said I hope I can learn/have learnt enough programming to get something together.
Same.
Same
No, there won’t. “10 seconds” didn’t have 2000 WarioWare types games either.
I don’t understand those “EVERY GAME WILL BE LIKE X” complaints. It never actually happens.
Lol, usually it’s funnier, but yeah the poison cup was kinda funny XD
The secret ingredient is… play test early?
That tastes like Math! Started cringing at the keynote, somehow ended up laughing. Great job!
Best ever keynote. Gunna watch it again right now.
that was a great keynote. well done /ludum dare/ro
Did I hear it correctly, the secret ingredient is time?
It’s love, people. Don’t you watch television?
No, that’s the fifth element, right?
No, that’s slime.
Good luck to everybody!! im excited
#welovegamedevs
I’m not rooting for any themes. The one I like least will be picked anyway
So I’m not letting myself get attached! Just going to roll with whatever comes my way.
What is the one you like least?
First time Ludum Dare and lot of funny themes in pool nice !
A funny Keynote to calm the nerves before the competition
Impressive web site, Distinguished feedback that I can tackle. Im moving forward and may apply to my current job as a pet sitter, which is very enjoyable, but I need to additional expand. http://itsmydownload.com
