Corruptong Postmortem

Hey everyone! Mini LD48 is over, and I had a blast. I made Corruptong, pictured above. If you haven’t already, go play it! It’s Pong, but even more fun!

This was my first LD/MiniLD where I competed alone, as this game essentially needed no art. As much as I love making games with friends, this was honestly probably my favorite game to come out of a LD so far (this is my fourth), and I had the best time making it.

As for the game itself, I got this idea about a week before the jam started, and was very eager to make it! It draws huge inspiration from the talk “Juice It or Lose It” by Martin Jonasson and Petri Purho. This inspired the color changes, particle effects, screenshake, and really even the core concept of the effects. Go watch the video if you have 20 minutes, it’s great fun and really useful.

In terms of what I didn’t get to, there were a few minor things, including working on the ball movement (preventing horizontal or too steeply vertical trajectories, as well as making the speed more constant), improving the particle effect (which I really just hacked up at the last minute, and could’ve done much better), better music (I used the music generation tool autotracker, which makes great music, but it doesn’t loop!), and an AI (my sole attempt at an AI resulted in an unbeatable one, so I scrapped the idea).

But all in all, this was another fantastic Ludum Dare experience! See you guys next month!

  1. Still crazy fun. But sometimes when the ball is launching from the start position it’s too fast to get to even if one is positioned in the middle. Or at least that’s how it feels.

      Yup, that’s definitely an issue. Often it would either go too fast or too slow, so I decided to choose fast and write it off as “challenging” instead of having to have it be slow and boring.
