Introductory postish

Hello folks,

I’m V, and at the moment I’m learning Flash for a school project, and I knew this site so I thought “what the hell, I’m just going to do this”. So my challenge is to learn AS and Flash in a few weeks, do LD #25 and get a good grade. Yes, it is impossible. Yes, I’m still going to try. So, a few things about myself:

As you probably have seen, I’m called V. I’m from Holland, in a place where there’s exactly NOTHING to do except internet (somehow we managed to get that :P). Usually I make websites  or play games (like Ludum Dare games, that’s how I knew the compo). I am bad at writing introductory posts. I like the name Bob. I like food, lots and lots of food. I use a lot of brackets in this post (wow). I have run out of inspiration for this introductory post.

My plan is to either learn Flash and do the normal 48-hour compo, or (if I don’t manage to learn enough to do it) do the jam in 48 hours (as I don’t have more time) and just copy and paste a lot of code, but make the graphics and stuff myself. If anyone knows some good Flash CS4/CS5 and AS tutorials (no Flixel/Flashpunk/FlashDevelop though, it (unfortunately)has to be Adobe Flash), please leave them in comments.

TL;DR: Learning Flash, and I’m in.

Best wishesish,

Why does it have to be Flash Cs4/Cs5? With Flashdevelop you also compile to swf. The only difference is the IDE and for coding Flash itself isn’t very good (you can easily lose track of where you left all your code!). A combination of Cs4 and Flashdevelop is also possible.
The previous Ludum I used Flash for the graphics and Flashdevelop for the coding. You can export your movieclips to swc files and import (embed) them in Flashdevelop.
For tutorials, I don’t know about any specific ones, but Adobe As3 Classroom in a Book is made for coding with Cs4/5. It isn’t free though and if you already have some programming experience it may be too easy.

A quick look with google I come with this link, that looks like a nice starting point.
Or a simple game made with Cs5 for Iphone:
(theres of course a lot more, I suggest googling terms like ‘as3’ ‘tutorial’ ‘cs4’ ‘game’).

But considering you want to create a game with Flash I suggest you try to make a simple one before the real Ludum. You learn a lot by doing.
    Good luck.

Thanks a lot. I can discuss with my teacher next class whether I can use FlashDevelop or not, but I probably can’t download it on the school’s computers as they’re crap. Well, anyway, thanks a lot 😀

I always, always recommend this, as it’s one of the single greatest tutorials ever written and pretty much gave me my first real taste of programming. And it’s for the CS products, if your teacher keeps you from using FlashDevelop.
