    MiniLD #24 – Pick ‘n’ Mix!

    Posted by (twitter: @S0phieH)
    January 25th, 2011 4:18 pm

Weekend of the 14th of February, starting at the usual time.

…and by that, I mean the weekend before, so that’s 12th-13th, so the real start time is:

    4am, Saturday February 12th UTC — 9pm Friday Feburary 11th EST/6pm PST

    MiniLD #24 starts 1346 days, 9 hours, 13 minutes, 32 seconds ago

of course you’re welcome to enter whenever you like, I’m not strict with mini times <3

Going to announce the ‘theme’ early since it’s a mini, I’m relaxed with rules and time so do what you like.

    Theme: Pick ‘n’ Mix

here’s how it’s going to work, I have lists of themes, limitations and rules. pick one (or more) of each and go!

    Themes:

    • True Love
    • Tainted Love
    • Inside-out
    • Alternate universe spinoff of a major franchise
    • Tetris is now a <genre other than puzzle> game!
    • Fishing

    Limitations:

    • 2 button input only
    • 1 button input only
    • 2 colours
    • Game must end in 60 seconds
    • All audio must be your own voice
    • Framerate cap at 5fps

    Rules:

    • All variable, class, function etc names must be palindromes
    • Work with a partner
    • Use a tool/language you have never used before
    • Wear something absurd whilst making the entire game, upload webcam timelapse to youtube when done.
    • Wear nothing whilst making the entire game, upload webcam timelapse to amateur porn site when done.
    • Game must be code complete in the first 3 hours, if not, must start over. NO CODING AFTER THAT.

there you go, pick one or more from each section, or do your own thing, it’s only a mini after all.

regarding times, make the game across whatever 48 hour(ish) period you like, spend more than 48 hours or spend less, I don’t care. submissions will be open for probably about a week after the weekend noted above, but if you want to dev alongside others, make your game over that weekend :)

    THAT IS ALL! :)

edit: >>>>> Submit your games here! <<<<<

    Original post:

no I’m not gonna let you vote on a theme, but I haven’t settled on one so if you have any suggestions on theme or rules, feel free to drop them in the comments :)

I know it’s not been long since I last hosted a mini, but this was originally a spot claimed by Terry, but he mentioned something about saving the world before lighting a cigar, getting on his motorbike then driving out the 2nd floor window and off into the distance. so I figured I’d take the spot now instead of September again :)

p.s. anyone who uses Valentines Day as an excuse not to take part is only going to look like an idiot, there’s nothing more romantic than making a game and dedicating it to your partner/spouse/sexbuddy/random-guy-on-a-train. ;)

Hurray Sophie! Really looking forward to next month

    2. rule idea: “make a game using software or a language you have never used before” what do you think?

    3. Sakar says:

Sounds like it would be really interesting and fun, though for people like me it could be difficult to find something (I’ve used a LOT of different software and languages), and people will probably spend most of the compo learning to new tool/language instead of making a game. Could work well if it wasn’t for the short contest duration.

    4. [...] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Chris Butler and Leonardo Millan, Sophie Houlden. Sophie Houlden said: MiniLD#24 February 14th http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/2011/01/25/minild-24/ #ld48 Be there or I'll tell everyone that thing about you. [...]

    5. Rule idea: the game theme is TRUE LOVE. Make a love story, or a tragedy, or a soap opera, or a conversation-based japanese-style dating sim, or a romancing-the-stone RPG. The possibilities are endless, fits any game genre from rpg to platformer to shmup, and it would fit the Feb 14 date wonderfully.

      • MrDude says:

I like that idea. Not only because it fits the holiday, but because it would lead to some very wacky games.

Well, that and some games where the theme is just in the plot.

      • Felipe Budinich says:

I agree. This would be the most appropriate theme.

      • Giovanni Perillo says:

I really like this idea :D
The possibilities are endless, like make a plumber earn special powers by eating mushrooms and end up fighting a giant monster with a tortoise shell and that spit fire, just to rescue the woman he loves… xD
I agree that the theme should be TRUE LOVE :P

    6. PoV says:

I thought it was funny how many games seem to be named “Love” (Eskil’s 3D tools crazyfest, etc), so my totally joking suggestion is “The game is named Love”, akin to the silly themes one where you had to name your game a year.

    7. Falcon256 says:

Well.. I guess this works as a birthday present for me. Although, I did plan on drinking heavity on the 14th. That may be my personal sub-theme… Coding while drunk. Or it might be avoiding the wife on valentines day/birthday.

    8. Six says:

Seriously, once he’s back from saving the world, Terry and Adam should do a colaboration for motorbike Canabalt. With a cigar.

    9. snottlebocket says:

What about destruction? I’m in a “let’s break some shit” kind of mood. If you need a valentines tie-in, you can always tell people to go break some hearts.

    10. Does that mean it’ll be 12th-14th? Only the 14th is a Monday…

    11. hamburger says:

      I’ll definitely participate this time!

    12. hdon says:

I definitely vote for Valentine’s Day theme!

Also, dedicating a game to your loved one is a great Valentine’s Day gift, but if you have no such person, Valentine’s Day is also a great day to get laid. Maybe someone else can figure out how to make that happen by spending the weekend at your computer making a video game…

    13. 7Soul says:

Mine will be called “Forever Alone: The Movie: The Game”

    14. MrDude says:

I’m debating with myself about whether to enter early. I think that I might do my Mini-LD game this weekend instead of next weekend.

      I’m still not sure, though.

    15. Cooshinator says:

I’m most likely participating. I’ve never done a mini before, hope it’s fun!

    16. scienceHal says:

      Hi Sophie,

I was wondering, do game jams happen simultaneously with mini LDs?
I mean, can a group make a game in 72 hrs & enter it as jam entry in a mini LD?
      Is this legit?

      Thanks.

      • sure it’s legit, I’m super relaxed with rules when it comes to the mini’s I host, and most other hosts are usually the same. usually its a case of “take regular rules, tweak them a little and make a game that way… if you want”

but of course you can do anything you like, when I host a mini it’s never competative, so it will be closer to a jam anyway :)

    17. MrDude says:

Come to think of it, I’m going to retroactively enter early. I have a game I want to make for the Mini-LD, but I want to work on it now. Though I will need more than 48h to do it the way I want to…

    18. fishbrain says:

awesome…. i’m new to this site and can’t wait for some ludum dareiness….

    19. [...] is a new Mini-LD next weekend. I need to make a game for that, it’s been almost two month since the previous [...]

    20. Giovanni Perillo says:

I’m new in here… I can’t wait to start working on a new game :D

    21. Frimkron says:

“All audio must be your own voice”

Ah just like the pre-sfxr years…

    22. Darkhogg says:

I’m absolutely doing this. I think I’m going for tetris, two colours and 3-hour coding. I’ll think about it…
Awesome idea for this MiniLD, by the way.

    23. Bender says:

“True Love” + “All audio must be your own voice” + “1 button input only” + “Work with a partner” + “Wear nothing whilst making the entire game, upload webcam timelapse to amateur porn site when done.” = Could be absolutely awesome and strange :D and sick too …

    24. hidas says:

I’m on vacation, so I’ll have plenty of time to work on my entry. I’m using only one limitation: only one button.
Can’t wait for the LD to start!

    25. MrDude says:

I’m going to pull one of my patented Mr. Dude’s Flake-Out moves and abandon the idea of Foxy Ninja being for the Mini-LD. I’ll still work on it, but not for the Mini. It’s taking way too much time to get it the way I want it.

I’ve got something in mind that I will do over the course of Friday morning (EST) Monday morning (EST) this weekend.

      I will be using:
      * Alternate universe spinoff of a major series (Touhou with fighting robots)
      * 2-Button control (Mouse move + mouse click)
      * Tool/language I’ve never used before (BulletML)

I’m pumped for this weekend! Until then, I’ve got shelved projects to revive!

    26. alfredofreak says:

Perfect! A Ludum Dare I can fit into my schedule. Now, I just need to figure out what rules I want…

    27. rik says:

I was gonna skip this, since it’s not only Valentine’s weekend but my GF’s birthday, but have managed to rope her into it via the ‘work with a partner’ rule!

    28. 31eee384 says:

I thought of an idea that uses all* themes and limitations, but unfortunately I can’t do that with the rules.
(*Choosing two-button input over just one, but that’s the only exception.)

So, for the rules, I’m just going to do “use a tool/language you’ve never used before” with Flixel. Luckily I never succumbed to other people telling me that I should try it. :)

    29. Codexus says:

How do you come up with crazy stuff like that? :D

I like it, it’s a lot easier to accept a constraint if we can choose it.

For the tool you have never used before, is it OK if we have already downloaded it and read documentation, just never made anything with it?

    30. Sos says:

I wasn’t going to enter until I saw this:

Game must be code complete in the first 3 hours, if not, must start over. NO CODING AFTER THAT.

      That’s my theme!

    31. Sakar says:

Because it’s a Mini-LD I’m gonna go ahead and not choose a theme, but I will use some of the limitations and rules (still need to choose which ones though)

    32. MrDude says:

If I don’t use a limitation, but use the “Software you’ve never used before” rule more than one, does it still count?

I’m using a level editor I’ve never used before, and I’m also going to use Gimp, which I’ve never used in a finished game before. Plus, I may even be using LMMS, which I’ve never used in a game before at all and have only fiddled with.

      Just asking :)

    33. lingmops says:

Question, by work with partner do you mean sexy partner, or generally another human? I know it’s not strict rules, but I’d like to know if I can claim that rule used, or if it’d not really be in the spirit of things.

      • either is fine, but if you can find a partner in ‘buddy cop’ movie style that would be best.

we could have this thing where you go outside the law to make your game, and I have to take away your badge and compiler, I throw you off the case but you make your game anyway and save the day, and I have to let you back on the force because the mayor is all on my ass about how you’re this big hero team now.

        …or whatever ^___^

      • lingmops says:

Right, this will be my first LD related thingumy.
        I’ll be doing:
        True Love
        2 button input only
Game must end in 60 seconds

All audio must be your own voice
        -OR-
        Work with a partner

    34. Billy Wenge-Murphy says:

Thank god those rules are optional; I don’t want to be seen naked-coding on a porn site

      AGAIN.

    35. AppleEncore says:

Heh Heh Heh ^^ This seems so epic. I can’t believe it – Palindromes! :D I found a site, it has some cool Palindromes… Golf? No sir, prefer prison-flog. :)

    36. Jake Birkett says:

I almost started early. The start time in PST is really 8pm, not 6pm.

Considering if wearing a dressing gown and slippers is absurd enough…

    37. Giovanni Perillo says:

OK, I got my themes and things here…
      Themes:
      » True Love
      » Tainted Love
      Limitations:
» All audio must be your own voice
      Rules:
» Game must be code complete in the first 3 hours, if not, must start over. NO CODING AFTER THAT.

I started the game, I got all the scripts I was going to use (I am using RPG Maker XP) and my “code part” is ready. But now I have a question now…

When you say ” All audio must be your own voice”, that means that the music of the game need to be my own voice too? ’cause it’s getting hard to make “good” musics here… and my voice aren’t the best to make music… ^-^’

      • Giovanni Perillo says:

I restarted my project… I found some bugs on my scripts and I needed to start all over xD
So… Last night I had a dream about an TETRIS… maybe someone already made something like that [or maybe not] but I dreamed that, so it will be amazing! and I will try to finish all today [I started today this new game... and the another one was getting giant...]…

Well… I just changed my Theme to “Tetris is now a game!”…

And I still don’t know if the musics need to be my own voice… but this one will not be a hard one to make musics… *singing Tetris theme*

    38. moltanem2000 says:

      :V fishing

    39. Giovanni Perillo says:

I thought you already were finishing your game xD
I really need new eyeglasses :P

    40. madeinpda says:

      Hi

For my first LD-mini here is what i have made

Mini Ludum Dare 24 “A fisherman and his twisted reflection”

      My pick:
      Inside/out
      Fishing
      2 button
      2 colours
      game ends in 60 seconds
      framerate 5fps
game completed in the first 3 hours

      Extra picking self rules:

Old style dirty as1 coding without functions
Ninja game making style: Complete the game while your girlfriend is sleeping and return to the bed before she notices.

I’m uploading the timelapse to youtube, but it’s failing, so…. i’ll upload my entry when the timelapse is online

    41. fishbrain says:

As a new member, it’s been great reading other programmer blogs; fascinating and inspirational (unfortunately, I haven’t done one of my own).

      cheers,

    42. Mr. Wonko says:

Almost forgot about this – the 3h restriction saved me XD

    43. [...] God of Tetris is my entry for the Ludum Dare MiniLD #24: Pick ‘n’ Mix [...]

    44. KungPhoo says:

Since one rule is to use a tool you never used before, this is your chance to try GLBasic now! :D

    45. [...] while back, MiniLD 24 took place. I didn’t make an official entry, but I did partway finish a game called Danger [...]
