Greetings Sports Fans,

Phil and I have been incredibly busy as of late, but it’s that time of year. Ludum Dare time.

The 15th Ludum Dare 48 hour competition is scheduled for this upcoming August 28th-30th weekend. As usual, theme voting will take place the week of, and the competition will start at the usual time.

Theme suggestions are now open, so share your ideas on the Wiki.

Before I talk about the other stuff, I’d like to quickly let you know about Mini LD #11 this weekend… tomorrow actually. It’s hosted by Jovoc, so tune to the site tomorrow for the theme.…/july-mini-ld/

Now, the other stuff.

As you may or may not have heard, Phil and I were both finalist in the IGF this year. We flew out to San Fransisco for GDC in March, and exhibited our iPhone games (Phil with Galcon and me with Smiles). Between everything that happened, we still managed to run a competition a month later in April. Somehow, that competition was our biggest one yet with an incredible turn out of 121 entries! So wow, it seems we’re surrounded by awesome.

Our hope was (and still is) to set some time aside to improve the site and how we run the competition. But wow… I’m not sure who’s to blame (the IGF or the “hotness” of the iPhone), but stuff since GDC and the IGF has certainly snowballed in to lots more work for us both (especially stuff right now). We’re going to do what we can to try and make things run smoother, but I wouldn’t expect the super-magical perfect revamp by the end of August. We’re both quite fond of and committed to the community, but timing is such a delicate thing. 😉

As always, feel free to leave us comments and feedback (call us slackers, etc).

Voting on entries is tedious when they are more than 20, how about a tournament style voting? Group the entries by 20 and have them vote in their group. then pick the top 3-5 entries of every group to a final group that all votes on? oh. and perhaps punish entries that does not vote?

I’m definitely participating and finishing an entry no matter what this time!

Last time I advertised about LD in every games related group on Linkedin which I think contributed to some of the increase number of participants.

Why don’t you delegate part of the website improvements to other members?

Even though this is a game competition website I think it would be nice to find some game programming tutorials. I will try to prepare something on Flash or Flex.

You guys do an awesome job running the site, and yeah there are tweaks here and there but really I think the site works pretty smoothly all said. I would suggest not to go crazy worrying about it, just have fun with the success of your iPhone games, LD48 and of course your correspondingly excellent (if a bit… erm… interesting? or so I hear, *wink* *wink*) sex lives.

Sweet… if all goes well my work project will have gone into submission by then and I won’t be in the office that weekend… Not sure I’ll feel like coding after the last couple of months at work… but an LD can usually get me motivated :)

Cool, now where did I put the open source game framework I was going to write after the last one, to make it easier to build a game… darn it I’ll have to start from scratch again ;o)!
